Winter Jazzfest 2015

57 posts in this topic

The schedule and line-up for the Winter Jazzfest in New York City, Thursday January 8th, through Saturday Janaury 10th, have been announced.

http://www.winterjazzfest.com/lineup/

I haven't digested the entire schedule yet, but thought I put it out here for your consideration, edification or vilification, as it may be. I see a lot of interesting folks on the schedule, enough to likely get me to NYC, provided it is not in the grip of a major snow storm. I suspect many of these musicians will be touring after or before the NYC gig, so they might be coming your way.

Yes, you usually end up hustling from venue to venue (they're fairly close-by in Greenwich Village) to catch the shows you like most. Or, you can stay put if you like the line-up at that particular venue. Sets are about 50-60 minutes. Last year I was able to see about 6 sets each evening. It is a lot of fun, lots of hubbub, scurrying about, very loose and upbeat vibe.

I need to go one of these years.

Looks like a mini, jazz version of South by Southwest.

I went last year for one night. I had a great time. Only problem is very limited or no seats - but I found a way at my main venue to get a seat and move it up to the front left corner of the stage.

I think with relatively short sets and multiple small venues, seating would make the logistics of navigating the festival more difficult.

Some of the venues had existing seating; these were mostly pre-existing clubs or theaters. Some of the more makeshift venues (large halls or rooms) had no seating or very limited seating. It probably would be a problem to provide full seating in those venues. So it really varied quite a bit. The festival pass does not guarantee seating, or even admittance at a particular venue, if it is too crowded/over-capacity. It never really came up for me, but it pays to get to the more popular shows and/or the smaller venues a bit early. In practice, there are enough venues and shows that the crowd tends to spread out.

The lineup continues to expand with website updates! I already have 30 acts I've marked to see, but I'll have to wait for the schedule of set times before making my itinerary.

can anybody figure out if and when JD Allen is playing? I was told he was, but I don't see his name; this whole thing sounds a little annoyingly zoo-like to me, but I guess it works for them.

well, I see his name. Do they ever post exact times and places?

Yes, they eventually post set times and locations. I'm not sure when they will, however.

Just a quick skim of the lists (and thanks for posting them), my "can't miss" sets:

ICP Orchestra

David Murray Clarinet Summit

Myra Melford Snowy Egret

Trio 3 with Iyer

Not saying these are the only good ones, just that they would likely form the core of sets I would try to wrap others around.

It appears I could park myself at the Minetta Lane Theater for the most part and be pretty happy.

Not a bad choice ;) . Last year it was raining really hard so we parked ourselves at Subculture and were pretty happy. I think that Minetta is one of the smaller venues, so park early. I need to work on an itinerary. I might be checking in at Minetta too. BTW, kudos to you for trekking to the Festival.

That list is insane. Good insane but insane nonetheless ;) There's more bands there than play in London all year. I'm almost tired just reading the list!

Anyone going is going to have one hell of a time that's certain. Enjoy it and let those of us on distant shores know what such a cornucopia is like to experience

And when my lottery ticket comes in (as I know it will with the Jazz Gods smiling on me) at the weekend I'll be flying over for

Amina Claudine Myers Trio

Tomas Fujiwara & The Hookup

Myra Melford's Snowy Egret

Marc Ribot & The Young Philadelphians w/ strings

Kris Davis Infrasound

Tyshawn Sorey Piano Trio

I hope someone gets that Melford band recorded - Pi Recordings, if you're listening

Thanks to Southwest Airlines for only charging $216 for a Dallas to LaGuardia non-stock round trip ticket.

ICP then to Minetta Lane Theatre for David Murray Trio, Trio 3 + and then the Ribot band which I see includes Mary Halvorsen - if I can make it I would stay up for Bennink/Caine

No way I can do 2 nights in a row - I'm too much of a......well you know

I'm nervous about having to cancel this trip at the last minute (too much going on in my job), but my tentative schedule is similar to yours.

7:30: David Murray Clarinet Summit

8:45: David Murray/Geri Allen/Terri Lyne Carrington

10:00: Trio 3 (Oliver Lake, Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille)

11:15: Mark Ribot and the Young Philadelphians (excited at prospect of hearing Jamaladeen Tacuma live again after many years)

12:15: Uri Caine/Han Bennick

1:30: Aaron Parks Little Big

1/10

I haven't decided between Jean Michel Pilc (Somethin' Jazz Club), Stefan Harris (Jazz Standard), Kenny Werner (the Stone), or Kurt Rosenwinkel (Village Vanguard).
