Posted 20 May 2016 Bass on my mind as yesterday was the birthday of Cecil McBee, a native of Tulsa (http://www.okjazz.org/index.cfm?id=90). Here's a link to 5 hours of the finest in recording jazz, featuring Cecil McBee's music in the first part of each hour, www.bluelake.org/ondemand
Posted 20 May 2016 Saw Cecil McBee with The Cookers last year in Gateshead. Hope he's still with them for their planned visit to Manchester in November.
Posted 22 May 2016 (edited) Saw Cecil McBee with The Cookers in March in Kassel. Great play especially with George Cables and Billy Hart in between as a trio! Theaterstübchen Kassel, March 15, 2016 Edited 22 May 2016 by optatio
Posted 22 May 2016 Seen him several times with the Cookers. One of my favorite bassists for a long time. Probably saw him other times in the past, too. One that I know for sure: Chico Freeman, Arthur Blythe, Cecil McBee, Freddie Waits, Mark Thompson in 1983.
Posted 22 May 2016 Wonderful BASS player, IMHO; his presence on a record is enuff in itself to make me at least think about buying it.
Posted 23 May 2016 I agree, he's extremely underrated relative to some of his contemporaries (cough Ron Carter cough)

Posted 25 May 2016 I had a chance to tell him how much I enjoy his playing after a Cookers gig and he seemed like a nice, down-to-earth guy as well. I've seen him with The Cookers twice, a partial Saxophone Summit set and two sets with Paul Winter (alongside Howard Johnson, Marvin Stamm, Warren Bernhardt and Jamey Haddad). As the NEA has recognized fellow underappreciated master bassist Richard Davis, I can only hope that they do the same with Cecil McBee. He's one of my all-time favorite bassists, so his presence on a recording piques my interest.
