  1. no, I think it's the one prior to that - recent quote from Phil Schaap about these discoveries: "Thank god they weren't transcription discs or I'd be dead."
  2. The Last Marlin, thanks to Niko, who mentioned that there is a bit of Tony Fruscella in it - excellent book, Fruscella comes off as a sad and self-destructive junkie, not surprisingly.
  3. I'm wary of Emerick's book (though I read it) because after it came out, another engineer who was at a lot of the same sessions wrote a very detailed attack on the book and challenged many of Emerick's recollections - and in Emerick's response, he denied NONE of the corrections that were made, only very lamely said something like, "oh well, sometimes my memory is off." Not a good thing, Also, for all his remarks about sound, he himself destroyed a lot of the anthology with terrible digital de-noising (I think he used No Noise). He also, I think, tries in the book to take too much credit away from George Martin. The most useful thing he offers is the observation that so many of the nice guitar parts we hear were done not by George but by Paul, which does not surprise me.
  4. no, sterile -
  5. that's the one with Maxine Waters - or maybe the White Album (the one with Johnny Winter) -
  6. well, as I write I'm listening to the new Revolver in stereo - very nice - important to remember, by the way, that most of these recordings will never sound 20k-20khz, since they tried to pack so much info on such small tape. There's probably only a few tunes - and I'm thinking of some of the very "acoustic" sounding material on the American version of Rubber Soul - that'll sound super clean. that said, I'm loving the stereo Revolver - can't wait to take it home and add some reverb and a new mix-
  7. well, I did find out the reason they weren't calling - seems they're dead -
  8. I didn't realize that Varese didn't have any hair -
  9. exactly my point - and I think Ron S has been in prison since 1993 -
  10. trying to hit 10,000, but I think it's who-you-know around here. Alfredson's always playing favorites. Send him some chocolate chip cookies and he automatically ups your post numbers by about 800. That's why JSngry is rolling in cookie dough - and Ron S hasn't posted since 1988 - look at HIS numbers. geez, I'm tired of greasing palms.
  11. thanks - you know, it occurs to me that I can take the stereos and, with my digital sound program, put them back into mono - anyone tried this?
  12. but now I have an actual and serious question - can I assume that the single-cd stereo versions will be around for a while or do I need to grab them right away, even though I have no money this month -
  13. I'm late to this but happy that both you guys are doing so well.
  14. I second the Ethel Waters, especially the stuff she did with Muddy -
  15. I don't think so - think about it Quincy - new 24/96 mastering that puts YOU in the studio with the boys; the heavy breathing of George as he wonders why he even bothered (since Paul is playing all the lead guitar parts) Yoko laying in her bed in the middle of the studio, wailing her lonely avant garde tune. George Martin phoning his wife to say he'll be late for dinner. the lonely sigh of the janitor as he waits for everyone to clear out so he clean up and go home..... and think of those giant lawns you can still mow,,,,,,,,,,,,
  16. yes, John L - the titles I was referring to are: Doxy, Limehouse Blues, I'll Follow My Secret Heart, You are Too Beautiful. I don't know - these seem to me to be peak Sonny, of that era. my favorite all time playing of Sonny is a film clip that must be available somewhere, from the 1960s, playing Three Little Words.
  17. and let's not forget the famous trio - Bing, David, and Israel, the Fabulous Crosbys - and of course, the 2nd Sonny Boy Williamson, who was known to use the nom de plume Rice Crosby -
  18. quite literally - see my post prior to my last post -
  19. than you should definitely pick up the unscented version of this -
  20. they had somehow ended up in his rectum - and were discovered during a recent colonoscopy - he was quite relieved, as he'd thought he had polyps - until he remembered finding them at a yard sale and ingesting them to keep them from other collectors-
  21. I would add to this discussion that if you want to teach yourself how to be a jazz musician you should start at the piano and play a note and figure out every chord that has that note in it - eg. C (Bb7/9, Ab7, Eb6, D7, F, C DbMaj7) now you has jazz.
  22. actually, these will the ALTERNATE alternate takes, takes so obscure that not even Phil Schaap knows about them -
  23. how about a Bing and Bob set? Personally, I like the Bob Crosby band a lot - or - Bing and Bob and Paul - with some nice cuts from the Whiteman days - or Bing and Bob and Paul and George - a little collage of rock and pop - or....Bing and Bing, as Bing goes one on one with Dave Bing - or with that guy Rudolph Bing who used to run the Metropolitan Opera - or Crosby and Cosby, to mix jazz genres... or Crosby and Mosby - a little noir music - or best of all, Crosby, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young -
  24. even better, the first 100 sold will be signed by Bird himself -
