The Last Marlin, thanks to Niko, who mentioned that there is a bit of Tony Fruscella in it - excellent book, Fruscella comes off as a sad and self-destructive junkie, not surprisingly.

I'm wary of Emerick's book (though I read it) because after it came out, another engineer who was at a lot of the same sessions wrote a very detailed attack on the book and challenged many of Emerick's recollections - and in Emerick's response, he denied NONE of the corrections that were made, only very lamely said something like, "oh well, sometimes my memory is off." Not a good thing, Also, for all his remarks about sound, he himself destroyed a lot of the anthology with terrible digital de-noising (I think he used No Noise). He also, I think, tries in the book to take too much credit away from George Martin. The most useful thing he offers is the observation that so many of the nice guitar parts we hear were done not by George but by Paul, which does not surprise me.

well, as I write I'm listening to the new Revolver in stereo - very nice - important to remember, by the way, that most of these recordings will never sound 20k-20khz, since they tried to pack so much info on such small tape. There's probably only a few tunes - and I'm thinking of some of the very "acoustic" sounding material on the American version of Rubber Soul - that'll sound super clean. that said, I'm loving the stereo Revolver - can't wait to take it home and add some reverb and a new mix-

I don't know - these seem to me to be peak Sonny, of that era. my favorite all time playing of Sonny is a film clip that must be available somewhere, from the 1960s, playing Three Little Words.

I would add to this discussion that if you want to teach yourself how to be a jazz musician you should start at the piano and play a note and figure out every chord that has that note in it - eg. C (Bb7/9, Ab7, Eb6, D7, F, C DbMaj7) now you has jazz.
