would LOVE to do the Chicago thing - been wanting to visit for a long time - if promo'd right, could draw some of the jazz community out there as well and would be good for the site, good for business - and please count me in as a performer - would love some organ trio backing (hint hint) - just plan it for after the snow season -
-
Berigan, I love you, man -
-
I think we should pay by the post - JSangry, we'll bill you -
-
"Jim, you're a mensch! " hey Marcello, that's actually Yiddish for "aardvark's penis" -
-
was wondering, also, if paypal will do an auto pay thing and deduct every month -
-
whenever I read one of my posts and I notice some of the fights here, I think of what Bob Neloms said on the bandstand about 25 years ago when he was playing a bad piano trio gig and he decided to pick up his kid's folk guitar and start strumming at random to see if anybody noticed: "Now you can see why jazz musicians haven't gotten any farther than they have."
-
look, let's get serious, Jim, if it's ok with you - I will pledge, right now, $10 a month - if 49 more members email me at allenlowe@verizon.net I will set up a list of pledgees and bug the crap out of people every month - which I do anyway, right now - I am happy to do this, please let me know if you DON'T think it is appropriate - even if it's not 49 to begin with, we can surely build it - think of it as buying one less CD or book every month - which is my personal average, and which I can live without - as for what Jim said: "How many new members are we getting? When those members post, are they welcomed or instantly ridiculed? Is this a boys club with a special handshake or an open forum that welcomes new people? I have expressed this before, but sometimes I feel like this place is playground for a select few. I want people to feel comfortable here. I want people to want to join in the discussions. I want people to feel welcomed. I do not like the clique-ishness that is evident here sometimes." great points, and I know I am one of the guilty ones who sneer on occassion - we need to watch this, or the board will stagnate -
-
on a more serious note, I would be willing to help with the subscription effort and with collections - best way to do it might be to set up an email list and send it out as needed as sort of a billing method - second best way would be to get a couple of guys named Vince who own baseball bats -
-
I think getting rid of baseball, on the national level, would be a big step in the right direction -
-
look, Jim, do as you will to the rest of this site, but leave that thread with all the naked women alone -
-
I'd offer myself as moderator, but the words "Allen Lowe" and "moderation" go together like "George Bush" and "intellectual property" - on the other hand, if you guys can remind me to take my meds, I might be able to do it -
-
I actually would suggest, if Jim can be persuaded (and financially assisted) that the board be continued with only musical topics, though it may be too late, from Jim's perspective, for this - I also believe that there probably should be some kind of financial requirement, possibly for membership in order to post, even if it is as low as 5-10 bucks a year -

I reached 5000 posts!!! (renamed thread)
AllenLowe replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
actually, if you hit 5000 you get to vest in the Organissimo pension plan - -
yeah I know, my previous post is the kinda thing that's ruined this board - HOWEVER - I am serious about the blog; anybody who wants to keep this going (assuming we cannot kidnap Jim's family and hold them hostage to this web site) can email me if they feel like it - allenlowe@verizon.net maybe we can do a thing like Doug Ramsey - though technically, right now, I have no idea of how to do any of this - and, by the way, a major thanks to Jim - I certainly have done my share of tension-inducing things here, but he, by keeping this going in spite of people like me, has done the jazz community a major service - better than 200 arts organizations funded by the NEA, and I am absolutely serious about that - I have worked in many sides of that arts world, and I have rarely seen a place as open and stimulating as this one -
-
If this turns out to be real - YIKES, can't believe it - well, I've been putting off setting up a blog on my web site - but would be happy to do it if it's manageable - with a select few - sort of like in Dr. Strangelove where the Nazi doctor says that the world of the future will be for the intellectual superior to mate with the most beautiful women available - so - if your IQ is above 175, OR you are physically attractive (of course, I'm 2 for 2, but we can't all expect to do so well) - well, than you may survive this -
-
stange happenings, and unfortunate, yes - with all its digressions, I find this board a great place (maybe BECAUSE of all its digressions) - I may be wrong, but I'm willing to bet the financial aspect is what drags Jim down the most - not that he is not upset by the other, but he probably feels like he has to pay for all of this grief, and I can understand his desire not to - my email, btw, is allenlowe@verizon.net phone is 207-741-2846 web site is www.allenlowe.com SS #: 999-99999-999999-555555-456545654656

The Polite Thread: I'm Going to be Nice
AllenLowe replied to AllenLowe's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
none - and that may be the problem - -
on the program I use - Steinberg Wavelab - it does not apply compression, though that is another way to normalize a wave file - I suspect with these guys it is basically a method of trying to make sure levels are consistent - and a lazy way out, as to do this correctly and in a way that is sonically best, one needs to listen to the LP, find a peak passage, and set levels accordingly (though somewhat risky, this assumes that the LP will be internally consistent, and that other passages will not overload - and in 15 years of doing this I've never had a problem with an LP transfer ) -

I sure could use a nice cup of tea - with some demerol dissolved in it - -
"applying a constant amount of gain" - re normalisation - Couw, I don't think this is correct, at least relative to one program I use, which basically just takes a print of the wave form and tries to make it "consistent" - and I have a feeling they are using a program to do this, not their ears - though I could be wrong - turntables are important - I use a VPI and it really makes a big difference -
