  1. Around 1960 in the company of fellow student Jack Massarik, later to be jazz correspondent of the Evening Standard, I met Ray Ellington at a Tubby Hayes Quartet session in a Manchester cellar club. Ray told us that his favourite music was what Hayes was playing, but that he had to make a living, so played what you hear on the Goons records. Max Geldray was one hell of an (unsung) harmonica player.
  2. Remember seeing them one afternoon in Scott's old place in Gerrard Street. Nice music! Malcolm Cecil (bs, 2nd from right) has now left these shores. Tom 1960 discovered him in an upstate NY gig a couple of years ago. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malcolm_Cecil
  3. Track 2: "Jumpin' with Symphony Sid"
  4. I first heard the word contrafact in announcements by musicians during the past couple of years. As a word I don't like it, as it gives no indication as to its meaning. It sounds like some kind of denial. I agree that it's a symptom of the classicizing/adademizing of jazz nowadays. Nice to know, though, that so many are still using those time-honored changes.
