As I never go to rock concerts, my idea of loudness is probably at variance with most answers here, but the loudest for me was a highly electrified Wayne Shorter concert at Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester in the 80s. Had to walk out and the doorkeeper said it was probably in breach of local noise abatement laws.

  21. Unfashionable, but accurate! Just finished another revisit to Penelope Fitzgerald. Set in the BBC in London at the height of World War II, this doesn't quite attain the heights of The Bookshop or Offshore, but was well worth re-reading IMHO:

  24. Ryan Quigley plays a lot around here. Did I hear he was Liverpool based? Pity this area isn't included in his present quintet tour. Last saw him in Wigan in a hard bop quintet called The Jazz Worriers , before that in a quintet led by Coltrane-influenced tenorman Benn Clatworthy.
