  1. We're not hearing "I hear what you say" so much these days - fortunately, as the speaker usually means "I completely disagree with you". Rather like that other weasel expression beloved of politicians, "with respect", which probably amounts to "fuck you".

  5. More and more I'm thinking we live in an age of weasel words. The one you have to watch here at the moment is "aspirational".

  13. You can see the air pollution! I don't think it's pollution. I took this out of the airline window, which accounts for the cloudiness. The weather was great, actually. I'm always aware of near-constant low flying aircraft in central London. Interesting to get the other side of the picture, so to speak.
  14. Thought I recognized this from the movie Somewhere, but turns out that was the Chateau Marmont.
  15. Walked across that one and back the day after it opened ! Only been across it by car, but did walk across the Forth Road Bridge and back many years ago!
  16. You can see the air pollution! Indeed it could. Once took a walk around Dedham. The trees had thickened up, closing off some of the vistas - otherwise as in Constable's day.
  17. Fine session. Well integrated group - they should be after five years! - with a brand of showmanship that the large audience loved.

  19. Just finished my fifth Stanley Middleton, which is perhaps as far as I'll go. (He wrote 45 novels!)

  21. This outfit at Band on the Wall this evening.
  22. Read all of Defoe's major writings in the 1970s for an M.A. course in 18th Century English Literature. No longer fits my present lazier attitude to reading. That said, Moll Flanders and Robinson Crusoe remain the memorable ones, along with Journal of the Plague Year which had almost a science fiction feel.
