  5. Indeed I do! Never heard them play, but got talking to a guy a few years ago while leafing through jazz books in Waterstone's, Deansgate, Manchester. He told me he used to play piano with them (and double on trumpet when needed!) and that, following complaints/threats from Kenton's widow, the band had changed its name to simply The Shades Orchestra!

  15. I think the tribute concert is a genuine part of the way jazz is today - the classic era was half a century ago and a fresh take on the great achievements of the mid-20th century, as well as scholarly study in colleges today of what was achieved then, is a natural feature of this postmodern age, whether you're talking jazz, architecture, movies, popular culture or whatever. I certainly agree that tribute activity is a marketing device and a hook, as Bev notes. I recall the leader of the the Tubby Hayes Memorial Band saying, "We're called that 'cos no one's heard of us".

  22. Well, as I said before when speaking of Tubby's collection, booze and pristine vinyl don't go together. Tubbs made no secret of his love of the sauce, with titles like "Pint of Bitter", "On the Wagon" and "Pub Crawling With Jimmy Deuchar". Incidentally, were there any other alco-titles in his repertoire, which I haven't heard of/remembered?
