  1. I've seen this inflated rat at different times as several locations in NYC. It's used to protest something; maybe vermi? I forget. It might have been a landlord whose building had an asbestos problem. Maybe it's versatile.
  2. When I checked the standings yesterday (NOT today), only one team had won at least 8 of the last 10 and only 1 other had won at least 7 of its last 10. Parity ?
  3. Yeah. Let's make the people here think we are considerate......Tee hee.......
  4. That's old news: http://speakeasy.jazzcorner.com/speakeasy/showthread.php?21122-Little-Known-Facts-(that-aren-t-true)&p=918151&viewfull=1#post918151 (last paragraph) Somebody better save that thread too, btw! I had forgotten that one. It was one of my favorites. Thanks for the heads up Jim. Just downloaded it!
  5. I gave Carmelo's plus minus. I agree his PER was good. A lot of his negative value ( teammates not scoring well when he's in because the ball doesn't move and the spacing and defense can suffer) shows up in plus/minus but NOT in PER. PER is based on individual stats. Plus/Minus is measures how well the TEAM performs when a player is on the floor. Here's the stats for plus minus for the TOP 50 plus/minus guys this year. You have to go to page 2 to find Carmelo. You won't find Kobe anywhere in the top 50. http://www.nba.com/statistics/plusminus/plusminus_sort.jsp?pcomb=1&season=22012&split=9&team=
  6. A friend and I once got off a bus late at night at the wrong stop in Chicago. We ended up walking next to a small stream or river or whatever and there was something swimming that looked large glowing in the moonlight. We thought it looked graceful and pretty until we realized it was a very large rat. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IZryWKvsRgY
  7. Denying Uli's request to not get him started again I think it's incredibly easy to overrate a scorer- if he doesn't shoot a good percentage and/or stalls the ball movement and/or plays shitty defense. Player Efficiency Ratings and Plus/Minus stats bear this out.. (eg. .NBA leading scorer Carmelo Anthony is 29th in plus/minus. Kobe Bryant not in the top 50) And it's even easier because newspaper and media coverage always start with "Despite 32 points by XXXX, the XYZ's lose to the ABCs 90-86." When your boys Kobe and Carmelo shoot 7-24, with 28 points it's rare for the media to point out that their performance just might have hurt their team. Now, I'm not saying GOOD SHOOTING is overrated. Assuming all other parts of the game (defense, passing, rebounding) being equal, a good shooter is invaluable and is often the difference between winning and losing. (eg, great scorer and ALL AROUND PLAYER Kevin Durant is 2nd in plus/minus, behind Lebron James)
  8. Didn't mean to suggest that all Wade did was create opportunities for himself. I was just commending him for being the only guy who seemed to be able to easily work the ball to get a GOOD, mid-ranged open jumper for himself. But it was among the many good things he did. New point: In the first half Tony Parker made a bunch of impossible looking floaters, seemingly while diving for extra yardage at full speed.
  9. I recently tried Long Trail's Belgian White, from a bottle. My review is: Feh! And this coming from a guy who in the same post admits to drinking Diet Wild Cherry Pepsi!!!!!
  10. The Pets.com sock puppet Paul Winchell Knucklehead Smith
  11. He's certainly not the only offender in the play by play universe, but Mike Breen annoys me with his perspective that how much a guy is scoring is dispositive of how well he's playing. Often he doesn't even mention a great pass that sets up an easy layup (eg. "Bosh again!). And even on the too rare occasions when he says "great pass" for an easy bucket he too often won't mention who made it. Also, last night he and Van Gundy kept playing up how the Heat can only beat the Spurs if the big three score a lot, totally forgetting that In game 2 the Heat won big with none of them having a big scoring night. Once again, the overlooked key to winning are the guys on offense and defense who are responsible for the team getting easy shots, be it the scorer, passer or even a guy whose defense creates an easy opportunity. Even last night, with the big 3 scoring 85 between them, none of the 3 were really doing it with long range shooting, and and many of the 85 were the result of team play and not just "scorers doing their thing." (However, I don't deny that Wade created a lot of scoring opportunities for himself driving to the hoop) And since I've already beaten the dead horse about hitting tough shots being way overrated, I might as well butcher and fricasee it> The Spurs were much more adept last night at hitting long, tough shots than the Heat- and they lost by 16. If a team is hitting a lot of tough shots it usually means it isn't getting enough easy shots. Which in turn often means a loss. (Hopefully I'm almost done with this analy-rant). I'm not saying a team that shoots a lot of 3's is doing something wrong. But there's a big difference between open 3 pointers in the flow of the offense and forced, long 3 pointers. The Spurs hit 8 3's last night, but several were on long range bombs with a man on the guy (especially Danny Green). Great shots, sure. But while this gave them some points, the shots themselves were taken because the Spurs weren't able to work for easy shots. Credit to the Heat's defense. The Heat only hit four 3's, but they didn't need to hit 3's because they were getting so many easier shots.
  12. How often do people who post on Name Three people look at more than just the previous trio of names when they post? I just took a look at a series of posts and it reminded me how funny and clever the posts are, especially the transitions. I know that I rarely do. And I'm a big fan of the game. As I'm wont to mention, I invented it and forever grateful to Jim R for acknowledging me as the inventor. . Anyway, it struck me as funny and odd that a thread with over 42,000 posts was probably mostly unread by the dozens (hundreds?) of people who made those thousands of posts!
  13. Lagunitas Maximus 8.2 ABV IPA from a bottle. Had a draft Long Trail IPA at dinner. I've really liked Long Trail IPA on draft and was terribly disappointed the one time I bought a six pack. It seemed much less flavorful.
  14. Assuming you're addressing that to the pic I posted, The Dead had just arrived for a show in Albany, NY. '81 sounds about right. Could have been '80 or '82, I guess.
  15. Admiral Steward Captain Crunch Count Chocula
  16. Quincy speaks the truth. I'm now laid up from today's attempt to fill the small cooler with ice. Also ,I wouldn't make the bed either, but 1) my wife works much harder than I do, 2) makes more $, 3) she does most of the cleaning/housework chores and 4) and I'm in bed when she leaves for work. 5 And I can't even imagine how annoyed she'd be I didn't make the bed. If I think (but I'm not sure) that she's not coming home on a given night (she sometimes doesn't) I don't make the bed that day, but I DO call to find out for confirmation that she's not coming home, and if plans change I get home before she does, specifically to make the bed.
  17. Are there some relatively painless, quick and/or easy tasks that for some reason you have to muster up the motivation or energy to do? I find that I have to psych myself up to put ice from my ice trays into a little cooler. It takes about 1 1/2 minutes total to do it (and refill the trays), and yet on days I do it I have to psych myself up first. Similarly, flossing and brushing my teeth requires an internal motivational speech. (I always do it though) Same with making the bed: a minute and a half of work following a much longer period of mental preparation. It's just weird the things that seem daunting that aren't at all. Anybody want to share similar areas of slightly neurotic-procrastination?
