  2. Here we go:

Dmitry chose SEK, Big Al got in between (thanks for keeping up the process :tup ), I was Dmitry's second choice, and SEK has been so nice as to choose me to follow him.

Now I'm going to be on vacation from October 4th to 20th, so I will choose AOTW for 10/19-10/25. I chose our host b3-er to choose another AOTW, as a way also of expressing my gratitude for his keeping up this great site! :tup

And now let's start from the beginning.

    --------------

SEK will announce his AOTW soon (10/5-10/11)

b3-er's turn, then is to choose AOTW for 10/12-10/18, and to pass it on to...

... someone choosing AOTW for 10/19-10/24,

then here enters the king ( -_- ) - I will announce my AOTW (10/25-11/1 before leaving for my vacation,

and the AOTW for 11/2-11/8 belongs to someone who's picked by the one in charge of week 10/19-10/24.

    --------------

This is it. Pretty complicated, but life gets to be complicated sometimes...

And (obviously) I won't pass on my holiday for an AOTW :g

Glad to be around you, folks!

    ubu

To complicate things again / even more, Ubu's account of events is not the whole story...

Since Dmitry hadn't heard anything from another nominee, he PMed me, asking me to pick the AotW. I declined for personal reasons, whereupon Dmitry PMed someone else.

  3. At least it is much better than the Europeans losing all their currencies (and autonomy) to the blasted euro. I was delighted to see that the Swedes, and, earlier, the Danes, had the wisdom to say a clear NO to the euro. But we all know that the politicians will keep coming back at them until they are badgered into saying yes. This happened with the Irish, who said NO to further expansion of the European Union. This answer was not acceptable to the powers, who made them vote again. Real democracy, eh what?

Shrdlu, I thought this was a non-political forum, so why are you bringing politics into it??

By the way, as you know I am one of those Europeans who's extremely happy with the euro B)

As for the Irish, they could have said no again the second time but didn't, and I didn't see or hear any evidence that the second referendum was less democratic than the first one. Oh, and the Danes voted yes the second time as well, didn't they (I'm referring to their second referendum on the expansion of the EU), and we all know no one tells the Danes what to do or how to vote.

I'll stop now, the political discussions on this and other boards are not good for my health...

  4. The LP can be ordered on-line. It's a hefty €68 (approximately $78) plus shipping, and payment can be made via PayPal. An e-mail to info@parallel-schallplatten.de might do the trick, but I don't know if they speak English. If not, I'm sure one of the board members living in Germany will be able to help, that'll probably be easier and cheaper than my help would be, as I'm in the Netherlands.

  5. Recommendations:

Piano - OJC or the XRCD version; 1958 Riverside trio and quartet recordings with Kenny Burrell, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones

*Kelly Blue - OJC or the XRCD version; 1959 Riverside trio and sextet recordings with Nat Adderley, Benny Golson, Bobby Jaspar, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb

Wynton Kelly - Vee Jay (Japan) BSCP-30036; 1961 trio recordings with Paul Chambers or Sam Jones, and Jimmy Cobb

*Smokin' at the Half Note - Verve; 1965 quartet recordings with Wes Montgomery, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb

*These are essential in my opinion.

  6. I have two Japanese 24-bit K2 remastered Wynton Kelly mini-LP sleeve Vee Jay reissues and enjoy them very much. I'm not so keen on Paul Chambers, so I can't comment there.

The Mosaic set, which also includes the album The Fantastic Frank Strozier, is a bit heavy on alternates, but, setting aside my "Chambers indifference", I think it would be a very worthwhile purchase, the more so since it seems to have the best sound of all Vee Jay CD reissues, including the two mentioned above!

Malcolm Addey remastered this set and I have yet to hear a less than satisfactory Addey remastering job. By the way, did you know that Addey was the engineer of some of Cliff Richard's early recordings, way back in the late 1950s / early 1960s?!
