  1. It's worth tracking down the documentary MUSICIAN, which films Ken going about his business for a few days. Very illuminating and enjoyable film. Here's the trailer:
  2. ECM: Rest well ....
  3. I am absolutely shocked to hear this. A wonderful musician and writer. Incredibly sad.
  4. Yeah, check the prices for used JALCO CDs on Amazon....
  5. Interesting to see Inner Urge the top contender. My unequivocal no. 1 would be: 1. Page One 2. In & Out 3. Inner Urge
  6. LOL Whitehouse. Not my thing either.
  7. Not usually the kind of thing I pay attention to but that sticks out in my mind for some reason. It's a great record for sure. "Holland Tunnel"!
  8. Huge McPhee fan but less so of this vintage. Neat looking set but I'll pass. Haven't listened to this in almost a decade, i.e. since the allegations made by his daughter came to light. Still unsure how I feel about pulling out out.
  9. I can fully understand where Clifford is coming from. There's a sameness to the quartet music that I could see getting old. But I like it a lot, same as you.
  10. Leena Conquest. Choir. Symphony orchestra. NOPE.
  11. Yes, from Graham Lock's Forces In Motion, 1985. IMO one of the essential music books ever. One of the essential human books for that matter!
  12. I think I'll pass on the Parker ...
  13. "I met him in Paris ... And suddenly I understood everything, because while I was talking to him I was aware of the fact that he was way over here. I mean, he was not there, in the sense that we talk of there. He had already plotted out five seconds ahead of time what he was gonna do, and you could hear that in his music. It looked like he was a very slow player, but in fact he was making very quick decisions, and because he understood his craft so well his music has this air of easiness about it, as if it's just kind of floating. But, oh, the man is very ahead, a very profound thinker. He was far ahead of what you heard: what you heard had been edited completely, only the essence remained. Desmond understood how to get to the point quicker than most players ever learn. This is a lightning-fast improviser, who understood sound logic and how to prepare the event." -Anthony Braxton
  14. I haven't been able to get into this one. Something about it grates on me. I don't like the bad sound, for one, or the pervasive audience noise. But I also just don't hear Dunamll click with the Americans. The ones I've heard that I really like are the Mujicians, Ghostly Thoughts, Babu Trio & Sextet on SLAM, Remembrance with Elton Dean, Deep Joy on DUNS, and the duos with Tony Bianco.
  15. Another cool YouTube find: The Cecil Taylor Quartet in Prague, 1999 (with Paul Lovens, Harri Sjostrom, and Teppa Huata-apa)
  16. There's all that for sure. I also think a lot of this hinges on both Ornette's direct influence on Lou Reed, and the more indirect way that he helped open music up, which paved the way for the avant garde in jazz, which paved the way for the Velvet Underground. And in my estimation, VU is THE most important rock band after the Beatles. Everything we know as punk or alternative in rock flows from them in some way or another IMO.
  17. I have a few of these and I did notice right away that the quality of the printing on the jackets seemed very poor, unlike my other FMP CDs. Whether these are legit or not, they're definitely not straight-run CDs. Something is off.
  18. I listened to Sound Grammar a few times yesterday, and it really is one of my favorite recordings of his. Something about the instrumentation .... such a beautiful, broad canvas. I *think* this performance was taped in an ampitheater, but either way that's what it sounds and feels like: like it's Ornette, the stars, and the big night sky.
  19. Louis Moholo-Moloho has a new one on Ogun with an Italian group that features, among others, Pino Minafra and Roberto Ottoviano. https://www.dustygroove.com/item/755446
  20. A day you know will come but can never prepare for. We lived in a different world before Ornette and now we live in a different one without him again. If ever a musician deserved out utmost thanks, it is him. My gratitude is bottomless.
  21. Welcome Olie. Much to enjoy and learn here.
  22. Looks good! Also a new Resonance Ensemble forthcoming.
