Sorry to hear that. I happened to have the exact same thing happen to me with that same set some years back. I think I had it a few weeks before I had to let it go (and all the other ones over the months to come ...)

I wish people would dig up some McPhee groups from the 80s. Lots of releases of solo material over the last few years-- Astral Spirits is working on another one from the 70s. His solo work is amazing, but his Po Music groups of the time are so horribly underrecognized. I'm sure recordings exist. 60 improvisations were recorded in 1990 for Linear B.

I couldn't stand the first 3dom album, largely on account of Altschul.

Enjoy Dragonfly Breath. Still one of the best improv records of our time.
-
Very cool. Were you there specifically for TMM?

Great story, Jeff. -
The bassist Damon Smith turned me onto this exceptional box set which was self-released last year and can be purchased direct from SAJ: http://www.sven-akejohansson.com/saaj-shopdiscographie/80s-selected-concerts/ Five discs included, all exceptional upon the first couple listens: 1. with Mats Gustafsson & Wolfgang Fuchs 2. with Richard Tietlbaum 3. with Gunter Christmann, Fuchs, Torsten Muller, Tristan Honsinger, Alexander Von Schlippenbach 4. with Fuchs, Christmann, Honsinger 5. with Rudiger Carl, Steve Beresford, and Hans Reichel

Also news of an upcoming Otoroku release with Corsano & Edwards.

No patience for this one. The movie is bullshit.

I mean, it's all relative, but I personally wouldn't spend more than $30ish on any Hat Hut LP. This one usually goes in the $50-80 range.
-
Excited for this. I never managed to find a remotely affordable copy of the LP.
-
I think he's put out about 15 records since 2010. Admirable, and I'm sure they're all strong, but no way I can keep up.
-
Some of that is his own, some he bought from Hat Hut.

Not sure anyone else noticed, but earlier this summer Martin Davidson announced a disc of performances from the last Lacy tour featuring the Beat Suite band. The information has since disappeared from the Emanem site, so I assume this project has been cancelled. A pity. (I can think of one possible culprit, unfortunately)

Thanks Jonathan for putting this out. I will try to pick up the CD soon. I have the LP, of course. Comments above are pretty much spot-on. This isn't Ran's best album, but it is indeed one of his most interesting and is worth a listen (if you want Ran's truest work of genius, IMO that's All That Is Tied). I hope people buy it.

I read this article via Facebook. It was incredibly fascinating and informative, so thanks for your work.

You might could count Smokestack which is a piano trio with two basses, but yeah. Ran has recorded only one piano-bass-drums trio ever: Sonic Temples with George & Ed Schuller. It's a remarkable record.

What live music are you going to see tonight?

Awesome -
150 pages before the thing is even out. The Hoffmanites never disappoint. I will be getting the 6.

Allmost ordered this one also today, but but it just didn't make it in the end (wasn't to sure about the use of electronics on this one). The records that did make it: Benjamin Duboc & Alexandra Grimal - Le Retour D'Ulysse (Promenade) [2015, Improvised Beings] Tetterapadequ - Chlopingle [2015, Creative Sources] Giovanni Di Domenico, Daniele Martini, João Lobo, Gonçalo Almeida RED Trio + John Butcher - Empire [2011, NoBusiness / vinyl] David S Ware - Planetary Unknown: Live at Jazzfestival Saalfelden 2011 [2012, AUM Fidelity] I would embrace the inclusion of Christof Kurzmann on Double Arc. Vandermark has been very successful in incorporating electronics within his music in the past and he selects exceptional masters of the form and he does so again with the great improvisor/sonic mastermind, Kurzmann. ill be getting the recording but then again, I've become a huge aficionado of Ken's large groups - I've been more interested in his large scale works recently than I ever have been in the past. The last Resonance double disc set is pretty damn great, IMO. I think I just may need to hear some soundclips from the album before I pull the trigger. When I want to hear electronics in music, I normally rather just listen to techno/elektro/idm, than have it incorporated in Jazz. I can't really think of one album where electronics really "made" the album for me (although I have to say I was rather enthusiastic about Peter Evans' Ghosts album from a few years back). Besides that, large groups are a little "hit and miss" with me. From the Resonance ensemble I only have Kafka in Flight which I like, but don't regard as essential stuff. All that being said, the Resonance Ensemble sure has a mouth watering group of players, so I would really like to give them a second chance. You should absolutely grab the RE disc What Country Is This? It's amazing, and better than Kafka. I ordered Double Arc but won't have it for about a month.
