Well, I did buy it at a fundraiser for the Arlington Public Library, so it wasn't TOO big of a ripoff!

I get so tired of ESPN's pro-NY bias. On the radio, they sounded downright disappointed that their beloved Yankees had just lost. No celebration for Cleveland or anything like that. Just, "Swing and a miss, and the ball game is over." Like it was some kind of late August game by two teams in dead last. Sunday night's game, they were going apeshit that NY was winning. Last night, they were so subdued, I thought they had slipped into a coma. Can you imagine how much these a-holes would be juicing their undies if Cleveland struck out swinging, giving the series to NY? Fucking assholes, these shitheads at ESPN.

Introducing Duke Pearson's Big Band BLP-4276 question
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in The Vinyl Frontier
Well then, this is a pretty good fold-down! I forgot to mention that this is a promo LP, with the white MONO sticker pasted over the STEREO on the jacket. The rest of the jacket says "BST" inside and outside. The unusual thing is the record label itself: the old blue & white scheme, with a catalog number of BLP-4276. Hadn't Blue Note started using the Liberty-style label, black with a light-blue stripe on the left-hand side? Strange! -
Well, it cost me a quarter, but I got my answer: I want my money back. I know that I am in a distinct minority, but I like the 1973 reunion album. It is not a Byrds album. It is more of an "acoustic guitar/singer-songwriter" album of that era. For that, it is no worse than many albums in that genre from that period. It was common for two or more folksy singer songwriters to join together and record an album at that time, with varying results. To me, it is not a disaster or unlistenable. Someone expecting to hear what "Younger Than Yesterday" would have sounded like if Gene Clark was still in the band would be disappointed, as they did not even try to match the sound of the 1960s Byrds. And for that, I applaud them; I knew it wasn't going to sound like a "Byrds album." And I agree with your assessment that it's a singer/songwriter album. But with their level of talent, they still should've been able to put out something that was better than the bland CSN-type album they actually produced.

Is this a dedicated mono mix or is it a fold-down? Sounds like real mono to me, but then I don't know when Blue Note stopped making mono records.

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? I was wondering if anyone was ever gonna call me out for that....

I absolutely, totally, 100% AGREE!!! I'm gonna try that lineup tomorrow. But I'm also gonna add "Stranger in a Strange Land," just because I love that grooooooove!

Agree all the way.

Surprises me. He's a pretty good QB. I wouldn't trade him for Alex Smith - in fact, not sure I'd trade him for anyone except Manning or Brady. That's how good I think he can be. I admire your loyalty, but question your reasoning. This from a Giants fan? Captain Fumble Fingers? Where's the reasoning in THAT? What, the guy muffs a snap in Seattle and you're ready to write him off? This was an unbelievable ending to an unreal game. Romo proves he's human to the folks around here who are already speaking in terms of Super Bowls, and yet the Boys win despite all the interceptions. Regardless of what happens this year, this year's Cowboys are showing that they are truly a TEAM, working as a team, playing as a team, and (so far) winning as a team. Who would ever have thought the rookie kicker would nail TWO 53-yard field-goals? I love it when legal (but dirty) plays blow up in someone's face like that!

For some reason, I actually enjoy "Mind Gardens," but only if I don't listen to the words themselves. Crosby's voice blends nicely with the guitars, making the whole piece sound very melodic.

Noooo.... They were great, no doubt. But they stayed in stride until long after he left.

Congrats to the Sox again, Dan! So much for a Cubs/Sox WS this year.

Am I the only one who thinks LEEWAY is boring?
Big Al replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous Music
Still growing on me. Been listening to it a lot lately. A LOT! I like it a lot more than I did at the beginning of this thread. Maybe instead of "Album of the Week," we should have "Album I Don't Like." Those seems to generate more discussion! -
what is your formula?

I always liked "b3-er" -
I have the set on now. It's really a beautifully done box, and it was $45.97 shipped for a five CD set from Amazon. In addition to the Dameron, Elmo Hope, and Ray Draper sessions, it's also missing the Red Garland sessions. Hope the third box with those sessions sees the light of day. This and 'Fearless Leader' were obviously labors of love. I'm also enjoying this set. Just as lovingly assembled as Fearless Leader, but I actually enjoy the music on this set more than the FL set. But that's just me: I enjoy jam sessions like the kind Prestige was putting out on a regular basis.

With Art Pepper? Yep--also really dig their duo recordings. Do you have the Dexter Keystone sides--either as singles or the Mosaic Select? No, but I'll bet if you do a Night Lights about it, I will!

Frank Sinatra SONGS FOR YOUNG LOVERS/SWING EASY, grey label Capitol pressing. Just bought it today. Incredible condition. I'm hearing things I never heard on the CD. I can hear rhythm guitar! There's piano on there! Records like this make me glad Slide_Advantage_Redoux (aka Greg) sold me his record player last year!

aloc, You should've seen the look on my face when Chuck told me to read your username backwards. He, Skid, & Joe can tell you that you could've knocked me over with a feather. Or a can of Pepsi. One of my favorites from around here is "monkboughtlunch," because all along I thought it was in reference to Thelonious Monk when, in fact, it's a line from a Doors song! -
A good sense of humor can be the key to a speedy recovery! I'm spinning Doug Raney's BLUES ON A PAR right now. What a lovely sound Cables has. And I just realized he's on Frank Foster's MANHATTAN FEVER, so there's another reason to go spin that CD. And, of course, and has already been mentioned, I need to spin Bobby Hutcherson's Mosaic Select, since Cables is all over that. Gotta listen to this guy and find out what's happenin'! Get well soon, George!

I would like to think that your friends, believers and non-believers alike, would do just that. If they didn't, if all they did was say, "Well, Chris, I'll keep you in my prayers" and left it at that, then they're just being bullshitters. I'd also like to think that, should something happen to you that you were able to communicate to the Org folks requesting help/thoughts/wishes, we'd do it. I would (I'd also say you were in my prayers as well! ), and I'm pretty sure a lot of folks around here, believers and non-believers alike, would do the same thing.

I can't help but agree, even though my original post in this thread was a simple "Will do." In my defense, I just wanted to acknowledge Valerie's request and keep it as short and simple as possible. Quite honestly and FWIW, I think the most direct, heartfelt, and honest response was from Alexander:

I'll have to ask my girlfriends about this one; I'm pretty sure my wife might disagree. (I'm kidding, of course; it's laughable enough to think that I could get ONE girlfriend, let alone plural. Maybe if I played her my Styx records....... )
