Not necessarily. A PK has to be awarded according to the subjective judgement of a man who may or may not even have a good look at the play. I'm just not yet convinced that the PK was deserved. I don't know, Brad. Was Italy's goal a "break"? Sure, Zidane may have made a difference if he'd stayed on, but nobody knows. France certainly played well overall, I guess I'm just trying to give Italy a bit of credit where I think it's deserved (at least to some degree).

I'll have another look at the replay(not sure when, though), John. Sure looked to me like he could have stayed on his feet. Regarding Zidane's red, I hadn't heard anything official about how the decision was arrived at. Have you heard/read anything explaining that? I thought the ref consulted a linesman, not a fourth official. At any rate, by all appearances the red card was justified, so I find it difficult to complain about how the decision was actually reached. To me, justice is the most important thing... and although Zidane too a number of tumbles during this match, I'm not so sure about the comment from Domanech. Anyway, I'm not claiming to know entirely what's right and wrong here, so it's just for the sake of discussion...

Well, I was hoping for more (in terms of good play and a great finish), and I expected more. The first half was exciting (more attacking than I expected) but alas this finish was a big letdown. I didn't really care who won, but I hate PK finishes. I'm going to disagree with the PK call for France. Yes, there was some contact on the play, but that was really more of a dive, the way I saw it. I can't blame a referee for calling something like that a foul, but the replay showed otherwise, I think. It's too important a gift (as was the Italian PK against Australia) to give in such an important match. I don't see how he could have been so sure as to award a PK in that situation. Anyway, a tough decision, no doubt. Also, look how things even out- the same player was fouled in the box later in the match, and no PK was given. I was less bothered by that non-call, as a result of how I felt about the awarded PK. I'm with you guys regarding Zidane... a cheap shot like that... in a WC final??? Bizarre. Sad. Congratulations to Italia. They did deserve to win, imo. Scored a legitimate goal in this match, and played great defense throughout the tournament. Not the prettiest WC in history (please erase those first-round referees from my memory... NOW), but so be it.

As Hans mentioned, the French gave away too much in midfield as the game wore on, and Portugal deserve a little credit for putting some dangerous crosses into the box. I think the French defense was getting tired (and probably a bit worried about the man tending their goal. Volleyball indeed... Barthez was decent otherwise, but all it takes is one big blunder at this level.) Meira will be having nighmares about that missed opportunity near the finish.

Not the most entertaining match today, imo. Henry was definitely fouled in the box, so the PK was justified, and yet it was the kind of foul that he could have shrugged off (ideally I would have loved to see him stay on his feet and score a "real" goal, but I know that's wishful thinking). I like attacking football and great goals, so overall this match was a letdown. Some decent play on both sides, but in the end it looked like neither side had the energy to do anything. FIFA need to tell the referees again to give CARDS to divers... especially when it's repetetive. They could have given cards to the portuguese bench also, for complaining so much about non-fouls (after each dive). It's bullshit. Protect the integrity of the fucking GAME and start punishing these fools. [btw, how sad was it when Miguel hyperextended his knee, went down untouched, and the whole Portugal side starts crying to Larrionda about some perceived foul. That's just as egregious as people diving.] I still don't think too highly of Jorge Larrionda (not after his performance in the U.S. vs Italy match, and learning about his past record in 2002), but he was satisfactory today, I suppose. Still, I was surprised to see him calling this match.

Geez... that abrupt ending was a bitch. Not unlike your mother-in-law arriving unannounced when you're in the middle of... well, anyway- I'm just glad that the person who uploaded that identified the vocalist correctly (instead of believing the Ella Fitzgerald labeling at the beginning ). Sublime indeed. I think I have four recorded versions by Sarah (from the 50's, 60's and 70's), but this one may top them all in terms of pure imagination and confindence of melodic invention. Maybe a longer version of this performance will turn up... I hope so.

ITALIA was the best team (even if they didn't play with two forwards before the extra time.) GERMANY never gives me the impression that they could score (at one exception but BUFFON has shown who he was). The statistics shows, by excemple, that KLOSE did'nt fire a SINGLE shoot to the goal. PODOLSKY had one possibility but BUFFON prooved why he is the best keeper in the world for the last six years or so. The tactic that the GERMAN used was the same in every match: going in percussion in the CENTRAL defense of their opponents. You can't score that way with ITALY. GERMANY didn't makes any crosse of a little significance. Nobody plays on the side (expect ODONKOR but it was already too late when he enters the game). Personnaly I've enjoy the game. Not the greatest match I've seen in this tournament but a very attractive one. One thing puzzled me, aniway. It was the performance of BALLACK who have play, sorry if you belongs to his admirers, a poor WC all together. I've never been convinced that he had the great talent that somme people find in him. So, I'm surprised that MADRID then CHELSEA wanted him so baddly. One more time, the guy has lived no impression on me what so ever.. Podolski had two (at least) good chances. One was a shot with his left foot from the left side of the box; the other was a header (where he was unmarked), on a cross from Odonkor (the best cross he made in the game). Very early in the game, I saw Klose appear to hurt himself a couple of times (once where he slipped and overstretched himself. Maybe he recovered fully, or maybe he didn't (and kept it to himself). At any rate, he wasn't nearly as involved in the attack as he needed to be... but part of that was the result of Italy's knack for defense. Ballack needed to get himself (and his head) into Italy's penalty area. He has a strong shot from outside the box, but he wasn't getting any space for that. I'm not sure about Ballack as a director of the midfield attack. He's certainly capable in that role, but he was far too static in this match today... predictable, not dangerous himself (and he doesn't seem to be a great passer in terms of having the vision to set others up for great chances. I also wonder to what extent Ballack was fit in these last few games.

Well, I don't think any team applauds the enemy during a match. At any rate, I think the german team has been classy.

In my view Italy played very well, way more attacking than usual - maybe except for those tactical intervals mentioned above - and I found it a refreshing change from the extremely boring and destructive defensive "catenaccio" system they're known for. I don't disagree... "very well", yes, just not great. It was anyone's game until Grosso found the net. I was disappointed with Germany's subs (I mentioned Odonkor already... Schweinsteiger didn't do much, and where was Neuville?)

An ancestor on my mother's side (Frances Folsom) married Grover Cleveland in the White House in 1886. Does that count? I haven't gotten anything out of that deal, btw.

Yes, but it could have gone either way I think. Both teams had their moments, Italy some very boring ones. In the end the change to two forwards put Germany into trouble. Great tactic move that was. For once a fine game to watch, including a fine ref. Not to detract from Germany's excellent performance, but in my view Italy was the better team and had the better chances throughout the game. I didn't see those boring Italian moments. The referee was excellent indeed; he made refreshingly few mistakes. I agree. I thought that Germany played okay overall, but they wasted some good opportunities. Podolski had a couple of excellent chances; several of Odonkor's counter-attack crosses were of poor quality; and Ballack... he looked tired and uninspired to me throughout. Fairly efficient, but also very slow, and he didn't get forward often enough to take shots himself. I think the loss of Frings hurt them in the midfield... maybe more than I expected. Italy didn't play a great game, but enough to get the job done. I don't know how the german defense gives Grosso that much room in the box (still a great finish, though). The refereeing has improved steadily, which is a great relief after the way things went in the first round. [To Sidewinder... I didn't think Klinsmann was applauding Grosso's goal. By clapping, I thought he was trying to summon enthusiasm and courage among his players with the clock running out]
