  8. Right- somebody listed a bunch of them either here or at AAJ some months back. The "Stablemates" CD sounds fine to my ears, but I'm not as much of an audiophile as a lot of people, so I wouldn't try to guarantee anything to anybody re the sound. I can recognize serious sound problems when I hear them, but for me that's pretty rare. This is a really good straight ahead session (no trace of any fusion influences at all), and unless you want to search for the vinyl (I wouldn't recommend it ), this is the only CD that's going to bring the music into our living room, so...

  14. An interesting question... has it come up here before, though? I used to think of a lot of my imported jazz CD's as being rare and hard to replace, but a lot of them have seen repeated reissue (TOCJ's, Columbia stuff out of Europe, MPS titles, etc etc). Maybe the Lim. Ed. OJC's are the most likely to increase in value?! Anyway, I'll have to see if anything pops into my head in terms of jazz discs... On the other hand, I've got a lot of brazilian CD's that would be difficult or impossible to replace now. Ironically, what I think of as the "Kind Of Blue" of modern Brazilian music ("The Legendary Joao Gilberto", released domestically on World Pacific) has been oop for over a decade due to a conflict between J.G. and EMI. Imagine if Miles had kept KOB oop... Of course, the value of a rare CD will also depend upon the demand for it, and I'll admit that some of my rarest discs (jazz or brazilian) will never be in great demand. So, the degree to which we cherish a disc may have nothing to do with monetary value. Now, if you'll excuse me, I think I'll go listen to that Louis Stewart/Bill Charlap disc I got from Ireland...

  17. I don't know if this may have already been mentioned, but I just stumbled on a CD release of this oop 1977 session (originally on the Jazz America Marketing (?)) label. The CD is out on Candid, produced by Alan Bates in London. The new title is STABLEMATES. This is one of my favorite Blue Mitchell sessions, despite the date of the recording.
  18. Chuck, don't do this to me (I already had my wallet put away).

  20. Jon, I swear, I didn't see that until after I'd posted! What were the odds? Really, though, I never exactly disliked Denver... just didn't seek him out.
  21. Lon, why don't we just admit it... we're probably close to his father's age (or at least Big Wheel's father's age). "Anyone else have this problem?" Well, yes. My father's LP collection consisted of marches, some Mitch Miller, a little Boston Pops (if we were lucky), and he watched the Lawrence Welk Show regularly (thank God I had a pair of headphones in my room, directly above the tv room). Late in his life he developed an interest in John Denver (who I could take or leave, but mostly leave ). At least my mom balanced things out by regularly playing a lot of G.A.S. material on the piano. I must admit, I owned a few Lee Ritenour LP's at one time... not for long, though!
