  3. Not to put down any of the individual artists or recordings included on there, but to me it seems kind of ridiculous to try to represent a span of time (and styles) like that with 14 tracks, let alone coming up with such a goofy title (birth of Samba??). Either a misguided concept, or an opportunity to market some things that were available on the cheap, or both. As a compilation for familiarizing oneself with a variety of Brazilian material which may or may not have anything to do with giving birth to anything in particular, it's probably fine.
  4. what we don't have is a log of whatever commercial dates he was doing. Maybe he had multiple sessions on the same day? Maybe his amp got damaged in transit, or delayed in transit, whatever, and he had to use a house amp that he could not adjust to get his normal tone? Stuff happens, right, and there's got to be a logical explanation as to why Kenny Burrell doesn't sound like Kenny Burrell while still apprently actually being Kenny Burrell. True, and I think your scenarios make a lot more sense than this guy's: "Unfortunately, Kenny Burrell, another famous star, is not so spotlighted on this album as we expect (probably because Richard Wyand's left hand comping and Kenny's guitar interfare each other)." I just listened to the track again for the first time since Michael made the ID, and (of course) it sounds even more like Kenny than it did to me before. It sounds like perhaps his treble was just rolled off (whether by KB or the engineer) more than usual, but it also could have been foreign equipment, I suppose. To me he sounds a little uncomfortable or slightly uncertain with a change here and there, which seems to disrupt the usual chemistry of his phrasing.

  6. Right? I still think he sounded a little weird here. It's partly the tone, but not just that. A few very recognizable phrases, but there are moments where it sounds like somebody else was doing some heavy borrowing. It just doesn't flow like KB usually flows.

  11. I guess I can chalk that up to this being recorded for a small label, at what studio I have no idea. At least that's my excuse. Anyway, thanks to Michael for hipping this KB "complete-ist" (as close as anybody can likely be, that is) to this session. I had seen the cover, but never heard the album.
  12. 9. For some reason I want to say that's Jimmy Heath on tenor. I was surprised when the guitar solo began, as I hadn't noticed a guitar in the mix up to that point. I'm going back and forth trying to decide if that's Kenny Burrell, or just a too-good imitation. I keep thinking that the phrasing sounds too much like him for it not to be him, but the tone doesn't sound quite right for KB. Sigh... this is why I hate blindfold tests! 10. The head on this sounds like it could have been a 60's/70's tv detective theme (and I think that's a good thing).
  13. Yes, sounds a whole lot like Miles at times, and maybe that didn't help his career. And maybe sometimes, with certain leaders, it did help. Hint hint. i hope it's not that marsalis character. Tweak the ending of that name slightly, and you've got the clarinet player in track 1.
  14. On Cherokee, I was torn between Remo Palmieri and Chuck Wayne on guitar, but when I heard Dizzy, it was easy enough to verify that it's Wayne (group led by clarinet player; recorded for Black & White label). Now I'll move on to the rest. Many thanks (really, thank you) to Thom for making it so easy to jump in and participate!
  15. He's been on Adam Carolla's podcast several times, including just a couple of months ago. I'm not even a wrestling fan, but it's interesting to listen to him discuss his early life (fast forward to 1:22:40)... Another one, from 2010:

  23. I said yes. Your new post in the old thread also seems to ignore what I said, so you may want to re-read the whole thread.
  24. Did you ever hear "Memories Ad Lib"? I no longer own it, and haven't heard it since I posted in this thread before, and I still question whether there are any "single string" solos on that album. I think Green's "solos" are typically a matter of the rest of the band laying out, and Freddie continuing to play chords (although perhaps containing fewer notes).
