  1. I was hoping someone had the Japanese CD - is there no discographical info on it? The rear of the booklet and the tray card both reproduce the original LP rear cover/liner notes. Aside from what can be gleaned from Wong's notes, there is only the following: Produced by Esmond Edwards Arr/Cond by Don Sebesky Recorded in NY and LA, 1968 Director of engineering: Val Valentin There is an insert (all in Japanese except for the song titles, which are in both japanese and english), with new notes written in 1999, which only credits Tjader, Donato, Mitchell and Thigpen (all names in japanese only). ... and Bill is correct (yes, it was mentioned by Wong).

  4. I agree about Elis' infectious laugh-stifling at the end of "Aguas de Março". Gets me every time. There are some who think it's contrived, but I don't buy that. I've seen her do the same thing on a performance that's on video... there's either something about the lyrics there (or just the back-and-forth vocalizing in Jobim's arrangement) that simply cracks her up. Oh, and Jobim was probably making faces at her in the studio, as he did on the video I've seen. Have you heard any of the versions by Jobim's larger group ("Banda Nova") of the late '80's? It was included on "Inedito" (1987); "Rio Revisited" (1989); and "Familia Jobim" (1989, with Danilo Caymmi on vocal and flute, and Gilson Peranzetta on piano). With the flute of Danilo Caymmi, the cello of Jaques Morelenbaum, and the quintet of female voices in addition to Jobim and the rhythm section, it makes for a nice full, colorful arrangement, based on the 1972 version on Verve (w/ Claus Ogerman).

  13. Have you checked out much by Larry Goldings? I can't say I'm familiar with all of his work, but I've noticed that he's done some things that are kind of "progressive" in recent years (in terms of selecting tunes from outside the more standard fare for jazz). Somebody else here might be able to elaborate on that better than I can. At any rate, you can't go wrong checking him out, regardless of whether he's exactly what you're looking for.

  18. BLUE HAZE I don't know why, but this one is typically forgotten, despite the fact that it has John Lewis, Charles Mingus, Percy Heath, Max Roach, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Dave Schildkraut, and Kenny Clarke, and includes "four", "tune up", "when lights are low", "I'll remember april", and more...
