JK, In 20 years (I know it's difficult for you to think that far ahead), you'll look back on this and laugh. Don't try so hard to be someone who "teaches" around here. You've got some good qualities, but you can't expect to be more knowledgeable than many of the people here who have lived 2, 3, 4 times longer than you have. Relax, pick your spots, and try to be respectful of your elders ( ... which would be everybody ).
  2. Nice piece of writing, Jim. Covered all the bases nicely, and even clued in the potentially uninformed regarding some very important non-Prestige matters (Steeplechase, Black Lion, etc etc) without letting it get the least bit distracting or confusing. For your next project, may I suggest a complete track-by-track breakdown of the Nat Cole Mosaic set?

  8. We used to own a home that was built in 1937, and some of the bulbs in that house were WAY old (maybe original in some cases, like above the basement stairs). I never thought about this much until I saw that. We had a bulb above our freakin' kitchen sink (one of the most used bulbs in the house) that had to have been at least 30 or 40 years old. The damn painters broke it when we were preparing that house for sale. I've had pretty decent luck so far at our current (lemme know if there's a good pun there) home, and it occurs to me that we have quite a few fixtures set up with dimmer switches. I think I heard that they can add to the life of a bulb (could be wrong on that). The ones that are burning out left and right are the cheapass 13 watt compact fluorescent bulbs in our outdoor fixtures. I'm gonna go broke replacing those things. Now, what about slack-filled packaging? There's the #1 problem facing America, right there!
  9. Nice thread idea! I've had a few questions myself. Now if I could just remember what they were... Anyway, now there's a place to go for help.

  21. It was probably close to 20 years ago that I dumped it, so I honestly can't remember the details as to my reasoning. I suspect I didn't find the sidemen very appealing... didn't swing, as I recall. I also seem to remember poor sound quality on my copy (I don't even recall if that was an LP or an early CD version). I suppose it may not have been totally awful to my ears... but I'm pretty sure it was the worst Farlow recording I'd ever heard (IMO).

    Biréli Lagrène

Anybody who gave up on Lagrene after hearing him only as a youngster might want to check him out now. He's still not among my favorites, but he has definitely blossomed as a musician. He still has chops galore, but from what I've heard in recent years (sorry, haven't focused enough to say exactly what I heard), he's learned to harness the temptation to show off the chops and play music.
