  1. i think the opinion of some of those involved is that 'almost nobody' would buy all the individual discs on it (probably this means that there are things on it that nobody at all would buy individually - which begs an obvious question) - but once it's all out there, in one form or another, it's out there... i agree though, it's something which is crazily limiting. if you have any spare change left, you could get this - http://www.ebay.com/itm/300969625287?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEWAX%3AIT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649
  2. The book itself isn't the most gripping read.. but contains some impressive work on the lineage of various blues standards (eg 44 Blues), and info on the intricacies of the policy game etc. The stuff Oliver wrote about the lack of 'protest' in the songs is admittedly somewhat dated (i would say shortsighted but I'm certain he was no more ignorant of the dangers involved in a black musician recording outright protest than anyone today)
  3. The calypso remark reads as Larkin's surely?
  4. A 3 CD sampler will be available (though it's very limited in scope) http://www.bear-family.com/index.php?cl=details&lang=1&anid=4fea518a03700e4100c4990c8006f858&listtype=search&searchparam=black+europe

  7. Thank you very much! I am 40 at last - I've been looking forward to it for ages.. :-)
  8. Went to the small Gauguin exhibit at the Courtauld - very good, loved the engravings.. Then to the V & A and saw the amazing Constable oil sketches. Then the piss de resistance.. A minuscule show of Sickert's paintings of The Old Bedford which formed a part of a larger thing on the Music Hall. Wonderful pictures & atmosphere.. I am a bit obsessed with Sickert nowadays and I think I might be him in fact, reincarnated but without the charisma or talent or wit
  9. just meant that your previous post seemed to be a non-sequitar with the posts before it - i wondered if you had typed by error into this thread, as you ended by saying "which is why I started the thread" - indicating a possible reference to another thread
  10. Blue Train - I think you have entered the wrong cul-de-sac.. you didn't start this thread ?
  11. There are definitely people interested in it out there - the price is the only real obstacle. It's a majorly important project, and i suppose it depends also on your buying habits. Though for many people it's beyond reach, there will be many who will spend that amount on many smaller purchases over a longer period. For me, it's a major purchase, and the only thing i'll be getting for some time - it's something that interests me above all else (pre-war music that is) - and once it goes up to 750 euros it's too late. JSP will probably buy a copy too.
  12. thanks - I've amended the link in my first post to avoid any mishaps..
  13. Me. This month I have two landmark dates to mark off - I turn 40 and I've been in my job for 15 years, so I've ordered this instead of committing suicide.
