    Riverside CDR

When Document Records began doing this a few years ago I emailed them with my concerns - I got a prompt reply, which although it was very courteous and friendly was a bit disconcerting. The MD told me they had purchased a 'CD pressing machine' (on advise from their supplier) to make their own CDs, and that the 'CDs' were industry standard for audio listening. Also the machine came with an inkjet printer attached to do the labels. She was far more concerned about the appearance of the labels, which were white, and I think assumed this was also my main concern. So then they changed to printing onto the surface of the disc, thus making it even more difficult to tell visually which were CDR and which were not! Appended to the email message was a googled description of the difference between a CD and a CDR. It was obvious that they knew as little about the issues as I did and I really believe they were acting somewhat in ignorance to save money, relying entirely on advise from the supplier of the hardware. A second email stated that they thought that the CDRs were 'normal CDs' and not 'CD Roms' (and also that given the choice they'd bring back 33rpms tomorrow.. Occasionally I still get a Document CD or two, and there is no way of determining beforehand which it will be - CD or CDR - it's a gamble - and if I wasn't aware of the situation I doubt I would notice (& to me this is not a plus point!)
  2. This is a bit off-topic, but as an antidote to the homogeneity of the characters in the drawing above - a few years ago this book was distributed FREE to all five-year old children in the UK: it's the story of a giant gorilla who is lonely (because everyone's afraid of him).. until he gets an old piano and starts playing jazz alone in his room. The musicians in the neighbourhood hear him and invite him to jam at the 'Blue Note' and he joins their band, and.. sniff.. he makes loads of friends!
  3. or "Excavations in jazz" - 'the exposure, processing and recording of jazz remains' - maybe that sounds a bit fossilized
  4. seconded. Plus the follow up - "This May be My Last Time Singing". & Goodbye Babylon is fabulous (though not limited to black church of course). To accompany it, the Dust To Digital book/CD on baptisms is really nice - "Take Me To The Water" - great photos and music

  6. really great. Love "Other Bodies Other Souls" too
  7. That's a questionable way of determining the 'funniest' film IMHO - the quality of the laugh (volume, duration, sincerity) should be taken into account. Not to mention the fact that a laugh is not the only way of displaying amusement - I rarely laugh in a cinema and prefer to just smirk, and then maybe laugh later when I'm walking home (which raises another problem - how do they know that people are laughing at the film playing, and not at the memory of another, funnier film)

  9. I've been on hols over my birthday for two years running so had no idea such a thread existed... belated thanks for the good wishes!
  10. you can get into a door if you go to it.. it won't come to you
  11. Do people really progress through listening to music in order of advancing complexity*? I doubt it very much (if people like something they tend to stick - they won't be 'trained' up). I don't think you can assume that the best way in to jazz is via the more conventional sounding stuff. I suspect many people would be open to jumping straight into Albert Ayler* if they trusted that they weren't having the wool pulled over their eyes (people are cagey). And it's not difficult like reading Wittgenstein would be difficult, that is - you can respond to it at a very significant level from the start, even if someone else with a greater knowledge/experience can extract more from it. Re. the Krall album cover - a picture of a sexy woman (putting aside opinions on her eligibility for that decription) can say more about the actual music than a photo of somebody playing a piano. *complexity is probably the wrong word

Re. the husband's opinion of Kenny, and the stunned silence of her children - should we interpret 'happy middle' as 'the straw that broke the camel's back?

"Most of the time, I'm able to relax and separate from myself. With this CD that was not possible. The music can only be described as annoying and counter productive to the relaxation process. I was not able to relax and let go and it was because of the music I was listening that was playing."
  15. thanks - i'd missed that one. I like the Document CD, there's a very good female blues singer on the final few tracks - Johnnie Turnshill - and one of her tracks ("If I Had My Way"), was on a recent Dust To Digital compilation. The usual vocal group begins and she takes over halfway - it's great stuff. But the later stuff, seeing as he went on for so long, is hard to find. He certainly put out a strange mix of stuff (can't find any of my faves online..)
  16. I didn't mean to be facetious. It just read funny thats all. She looks good to me too. It's her decision in the end. I know - I realised after I typed it... I'm not an aficionado or anything :eye:
  17. what I mean is - there's no reason to believe she isn't happy with it, and as such - she looks great.
  18. She looks great - whether or not it's right for jazz, or her own career, I've no idea. But it's not pornography..

  20. Does anyone know of any CDs with Norridge Mayhams' stuff, aside from the one on Document Records? The notes to that one make him seem something of an enigma, and Google just thickens the plot this link indicates a sizeable discography, and a known biography, but I can't find anyfink plastic
  21. I was a Beano kid - I used to love it, but would eye enviously 'Whizzer & Chips' because they always had free gifts on the cover. But Whizzer & Chips was sort of the ITV of comics, and Beano the BBC (and my dad was a BBC man - always got the Radio Times and never bought the TV Times as it wasn't necessary to know what was on ITV).
