  1. Haydn - String Quartet Op.17/6 Saint-Saens - Piano Concerto No.4
  2. There are certainly many who have a different opinion, but I am not in agreement with Mark's piece. When Grossman was in his heavy Coltrane mode, he struck me as rather faceless and, to my taste, uninteresting. After resurfacing with an emphasis on bop and a definite Sonny Rollins influence, I found his playing hard swinging and strongly engaging. His many sessions on the Dreyfus label with some of my favorites such as Barry Harris and Cedar Walton (and a some others) featured the best playing I had heard from Grossman. He became one of my favorite living tenor players. Of course all this reflects my (conservative?) love for bop / hard bop jazz. I am hoping that Steve continues to produce more in this vein.
  3. Yes, I have a copy and it's a good one. A much better image.
  4. Brahms - String Quartet No.2, Op51/2 Burgmuller - Symphony No.1
  5. Robert Schumann - Phantasie Op.131 and Violin Concerto (after Cello Concerto) Op.129
  6. Mozart - Piano Sonatas K.310 and K.311 Schubert - Arpeggione Sonata D.821
  7. Brahms - String Quartet No.1 Saint-Saens - Piano Concerto No.1
  8. Disc 5 Op.17/3, Op.17/4, Op.17/5
  9. It strikes me as funny yet true that I don"t consider those huge Wilson speakers ugly. Would love to have a pair, though they are not even close to fitting my budget. While it is likely true that few if any wives would find them attractive, but for a "very modest" audiophile they look beautiful.
  10. Concert Overture Op.12 Symphony No.2 Op.19
  11. Listening to Sonny speak in such glowing terms about Lester Young really warmed my heart. I could sense the great love and admiration he had for Pres.
  12. Did this actually surprise you?
  13. Yes, this is a session I can easily recommend.
  14. Stanley made so many terrific albums on Blue Note that this one may get overlooked. Turrentine and Les McCann fit together like bacon and eggs.
  15. I also have them both. Not essential, but very much enjoyable.
  16. I do not recall her being part of the scene. But it was along time ago.
  17. I was fortunate to grow up in Detroit during the time when so many great musicians lived there. Before they left for New York I heard Barry Harris, Tommy Flanagan, Kenny Burrell, Pepper Adams, Curtis Fuller, Yusef Lateef, Hugh Lawson,Sonny Red, Kirk Lightesy, Terry Pollard, Paul Chambers, Doug Watkins, Elvin Jones, Charles McPherson, Lonnie Hillyer, and others playing locally. That early experience was responsible for the fact that players like Barry, Tommy, Pepper, and Charles McPherson have long been among my handful of favorites on their respective instruments.
