  1. Aside from the fine recordings by Eddy Louis already mentioned, I like this one. Eddy Louiss - Bohemia After Dark - Gitanes with Jimmy Gourley, Guy Pedersen, Kenny Clarke R.I P.
  2. I have 9 of the Prestige Mono SACD's. Tommy Flanagan Trio Overseas Elmo Hope Sextet - Informal Jazz Jackie McLean Quintet - Jackie's Pal Hank Mobley Quintet, Quartet, Swxtet - Mobley's Message Hank Mobley Quintet - Mobley's Second Message All Night Long - Donald Byrd, Jerome Richardson, Kenny Burrell, Hank Mobley, Mal Waldron, Doug Watkins, Art Taylor George Wallington Quintet - Jazz For The Carriage Trade Phil Woods Quartet - Woodlore Phil Woods / Donald Byrd - The Young Bloods I am very pleased with the audio quality. In almost every case I replaced very early CD releases. The clarity and depth of the music seems definitely better than on the early CDs.
  3. Page One The Real McCoy - (McCoy Tyner Quartet with Joe Henderson) Our Thing
  4. "See See Rider" from Ike Quebec - Easy Living on Blue Note SHM - CD Especially love the great Sonny Clark solo !
  5. Same here. I've never really understood the attention that this record gets relative to other recordings by Erroll Garner, but maybe this reissue will do it for me. I have the same opinion. I never really connected with this album.
  6. Very much agree. I love that record, particularly the bonus track "Tibbit." And the opening track, "W.K. Blues" (penned by Mr. W.K. himself), was my get-up-in-the-morning track for over a year. That said, what else I've heard from Strozier, which isn't everything, has never quite lived up to the same level of excitement (for me). His participation on McCoy Tyner's Today and Tomorrow, as one example, seems oddly inhibited. On that debut record, however, Strozier is in full voice and very much uninhibited. Doesn't hurt that Booker Little's on the record too. I wish Alfred Lion had found a way (or a desire) to get Strozier onto his label. I passed on the Mosaic because I already had all the music. Maybe that wasn't the best idea. (All this belongs on a Vee-Jay thread. Then we could also talk about The Beatles' first U.S. album!) I tend to agree regarding Strozier. His Vee Jay album is by far the best thing I have heard by him. His other recordings have left me rather cold.
  7. But what about the audio quality? Do you hear a difference between those that were RVG's and those not? What is your opinion of them?
  8. I just received another box of Blue Note SHM-CDs. Now have 27 of them. The ones I have heard thus far sound really good.
  9. Great looking list. But I am a bit surprised they they're not reissuing Al Cohn Plays or Al Cohn's America. I am a bit disappointed in the list as I already have 11 or 12 of them on CD. There are quite a large number of Xanadu recordings that I do want to get on CD, so am hoping they will be released later .
  10. Interesting that on the same tune - Born to Be Blue - on Dexter Gordon's "Lullaby For A Monster" , NHOP plays beautifully.
  11. Just this morning listened to a wonderful solo by Ray Brown on Lullabye Of The Leaves" It is from - James Williams - Magical Trio 2 on EmArcy. The drummer is Elvin Jones.
  12. Did you forget the Piano Trio in G Minor ?
  13. This is my favorite Sam Most recording. It would be difficult to find a "bad" session with Duke Jordan, Tal Farlow, Sam Jones, and Billy Higgins on board.
  14. I was fortunate to find a number of Xanadu CD reissues on EPM, Prevue and a Japanese label. There are many many more I am hoping will be now reissued by Elemental. As I am currently in Italy on vacation I am not able to list the ones I already have on CD or the many I am hoping to see reissued.
  15. What makes this set so appealing to me is that I have not seen any of the Bee Hive material previously available on CDs. With most other Mosaic sets I already had some or almost all the music on CD, but not this one. So I am definitely going to be getting this one!
  16. I too have the Condon and Bud freeman Chrono Classics, so was not sure if I want / need the Mosaic. I was a bit concerned about the many alternate takes of the same tune coming one right after each other. My preference is for alternate takes being separated out so it is easier to play through a disc without having to hear the same tune played 2, 3 or more times in a row. Yes, I do know one can program the CD player to avoid that issue, but it just creates one more thing to have to do. But after hearing how good the sound quality is, I may go ahead and order the box.
  17. This thread has grabbed my interest. When I return home from vacation I will folllow up with listening to La Mer. Not sure what version I have, if any?
  18. A very good example of the playing of Marcus is on the CD he co-led with fellow Detroiter Kirk Lighsey on the Criss Cross label. Not being home I can't give the specific album title. If I recall correctly, lightsey's name may be listed first on the cover.
  19. The concert I attended last evening was terrific. There was a mezzosoprano and a tenor. Each of them sang 5 numbers, and they did one duet as an encore. The pianist played 2 solo pieces. The music performed was by Puccini, Mozart, Rossini, L. Bernstein, and J. Strauss. I learned something amazing. The Puccini Festival runs these one hour concerts every single night 365 days a years with no interruptions. Last night the church was full as it was a saturday. Tickets were 20 euros a piece. They have a large number of singers so every concert will have different singers and sing different pieces. So we may attend another concert bfore we leave Lucca. This was a treat.
  20. This looks like one I may want to get. Interested to know the audio quality?
  21. Sitting in my hotel on vacation here in Lucca, Tuscany, Italy. Discovered that just about a block away there is a Puccini concert at 7:00PM every evening. It is in an old church with, as I have been told, excellent acoustics. It is one hour long and features two fine vocalists singing arias. Looking forward to attending a concert in about an hour from now. This is the birthpace of Puccini, so activities related to him are a significant part of the activities here in Lucca.
  22. It strikes me that Quinichette was long underrated. I suppose he was so much in the Lester Young style that he did not get the credit I believe he deserved. Funny that while I quickly tired of all the tenor players who tried to sound like Coltrane, the followers of Pres were fine with me. Brew Moore is another tenor man who did not get the credit I believe he should have received.
  23. I always have dug Babs. Out of town so can't give the specific information, but he is on some tracks on at least one Bennie Green record on Blue Note. I too enjoyed reading his book. An outrageous cat.
  24. B.B. King will be greatly missed. He was a major part of American Music. R.I.P.
