  1. I grew up listening to this as a kid, I'm sure if I heard it now my feelings would have changed, but Stanley is great on "Vera Cruz", which Pat Metheny and Brad Mehldau have been playing live.
  2. yes Elvin really was complete, right till the end.
  3. interesting thoughts mikeweil and Soulstream.
  4. damn. RIP Andrew. What a great, original player and innovator. "Dialogue" gets a spin later.
  5. As far as I know, at least what I have listened to, Elvin's first appearances on record date back from 1957. On Sonny's Vanguard stuff, Elvin definitely is playing in that more conventional bop mode, but theres the polyrhythms forming and a circular sense of time. Back when these sides came out, was there feeling that Elvin was doing something new, or did that something really "new" hit in 1961 when he joined Trane? Personally I can hear it on those "Night at the Vanguard" dates with Newk.
  6. I love his sideman work, the feel he had. I really need to listen to the Mosaic Select more, nothing really hit me over the head, although I do very much like the "Whims of Chambers" date. Thought about selling the set, but no, good music grows over time right?
  7. well in that TOCJ sale link, Toshiba issued "Civilization" and "The Story of Neptune" in Japan
  8. ahh yeah... with all this talk, Tokyo Live probably will get reissued, since some ppl have a direct line to MC.
  9. yes the live stuff is fiery. I also have a live show from Yoshi's in '88 that is just as good, it is a radio broadcast. I just really enjoy that band, although my fav. albums from the Select are "Civilization" and "Angel Street". The version of "Poinciana" from "Story of Neptune" is cool too as the groove is implied and played with brushes. Its interesting as noted in another thread that Wallace Roney stated Tony's cymbal sound never changed that much, but his stick size definitely changed.
  10. thats our own Felser I think. I couldn't lay down the money on his offer unfortunately. When the album was in print, was it this highly regarded?
  11. yes Kyo, $50-80 is unacceptable to me as well on ebay. I knew there was extra material, if it was put out as a boxset I'd buy it in a minute! Considering I won a rare JOS (Lonesome Road, thus completing my JOS on Blue Note listening) on ebay for only $14, someone should put up a cheaper price for Tokyo. It's possible to get rare and OOP titles without breaking your budget. Felser PM'd me a great and kind offer but I cannot take it at this time. I am just going to live with my CDR's of the album for a while. What's worse, if you look on Amazon, is the individual studio albums which are available readily in the Select, are up for ridiculous prices as well. Couldn't BN reissue Tokyo Live as a Connoiseur?
  12. is there anyone on this board that would be interested in selling (for a reasonable price) a copy of "Tokyo Live" to me? I have had a burn of it for 5 years but as I have the Mosaic set, I would like a real copy. I should be depositing more into my bank this week, so if we could work out a deal, send me a PM for details. I got outbid on a copy on ebay going for $78.89 final price!!!!
  13. I bought mine back in '96 I think
  14. when Pat uses distortion these days its usually on the GR300 with the regular guitar tone.
  15. how come? these are great albums. By the end of the year the Complete Sessions will be released, probably with a 3rd disc of live stuff and ways to get additional downloads. Nonesuch is having some sort of program for those of us who bought the 2 albums individually to get the Complete Sessions.
  16. yeah, what about that time Jim you told me to you know Seriously, Pat graciously allowed me to do an email interview with him 5 years or so ago and he was very thoughtful. Also due to miscommunication between the venue and the musicians, when I saw the PMG live, I wasn't able to meet the band, but...... his roadie came out, took my CD cover and program, and 2 days later it came back in the mail signed.
  17. I agree Pat isn't the slightest bit arrogant. While I am unable (at the moment) to see this tour, the Quartet album is excellent, and as the show from Colorado Springs on dime shows, live things are working very well.
  18. except one track, "Gazelle" was deleted due to space limitations.
  19. this is such a cool thread! Amazing photos too.
  20. Joey Jordison.
  21. damn, what crappy news Tonic is closing
  22. ok, so if I have the 2 TOCJ's of the Club Baby Grand material, my guess is that those additional takes have not survived? so is the eventual US RVG just gonna be 8 tracks?
  23. yes, speedy recovery wishes for the both of them!
  24. really Joe, "A Night Away", "The Sound of Water", "Towards the Light" "Don't Wait" "Secret Beach" or "En La Tierra Que No Olvida" haven't grabbed you? All those tunes really grabbed me. I know "Say the Brother's Name" you liked on the first record b/c its one of your favorite tunes :-) Totally unrelated thought but for the hard modes in the Guitar Hero series of games for PS2, XBox 360, etc... they should put a Metheny tune in, hehe
  25. their show from Saturday night is on dime. Give that a d/l and listen. It totally changes the perspective from the album, burning stuff live. I dunno, I don't understand people's aversions to Pat's GR300 guitar synth personally I love the sound of it. When he solos on that thing he really cooks, and things always soar to crazy heights in those tunes. Calling Mr. Gloss!!!
