  1. I mean no specific criticism of anyone on this thread, but I wish that we could all get past sniping at other boards. We have a great board here and can be happy and secure with that. There is no need to make negative remarks about other boards, in my humble opinion. Whenever I see the mere mention of another music board here, I always think, "O.K., here come the snide remarks, rolling out like usual."
  2. I was lucky. After hearing "Polynesia" several years ago on Kansas Public Radio's "Retro Cocktail Hour" show, created and hosted by Darrell Brogden, I was able to find a copy of "Polynesia" on ebay for a fraction of what has been quoted in this thread.
  3. To hear individual songs from these albums, check the archived playlists at: http://kpr.ku.edu/retro/
  4. Chuck, That was my first reaction too. After a number of listens, I found that I became familiar with many of the songs and it all became easier, all came into focus. I now think that in comparison to this album, too much recent jazz is too easy to digest, disposable after a few listens, nothing more to explore. This album rewards repeated exploration, or shorter exploration of small pockets of it. It is not like the disposable antiseptic wipes that pass for many jazz CDs these days. Instead, it is a bolt of dense, luxurious cloth. But why prefer a disposable wipe?
  5. Please elaborate! This is just a hint of the joyful reaction this BFT will inspire in you, and any nearby highly attractive women. Are we talking lots of wah-wah pedal? I am not sure I understand, but I do not believe that there is any sound of wah wah pedal in this Blindfold Test.

  8. While the discussion on BFT 91 is continuing, I want to invite you to BFT 92. Please let me know if you would like a download or a disc. The theme of this BFT is:
  9. Another Badgers fan, UW-Madison grad class of 1978. Incredible ending, one of the most unusual and dramatic of all time. I didn't like it, but I can appreciate its amazing quality.
  10. For rock, I suggest Dr. John's "Gris Gris" album, the group Spirit, and you cannot forget the Fugs!
  11. Allen, there is an issue of a music magazine, I think it's The Wire, but I am not sure (but I have it in my basement somewhere) where a guy wrote an entire article about the 1960s psychedelic music scene in Europe. An issue or two later, someone wrote a letter to the editor saying that the author must have known little about the subject because he missed the following signficant albums, and then there was a long list. The original author replied that he did indeed know almost nothing about the subject matter and wished he'd had the letter writer's help when he wrote the article. I will try to find these issues for you.
  12. I can't see the last two images.
  13. The song "If You Grin (You're In)" on James Moody's "Running The Gamut" album, produced by Ed Bland, should be considered. This is a 1964 recording which contains much of what was considered groundbreaking 5-10 years later.
  14. Allen, I think that the first few chapters of this book would be an excellent source for you. I think that Nicholson does a credible job of covering the mid to late 1960s in terms of musicians who were doing something new and different, and were the forerunners of the jazz/rock fusion to follow. Don't forget the work of Charles Mingus and Eric Dolphy, together and apart, in the 1960s. Also the Andrew Hill Blue Notes.
  15. Where did you buy them in Madison? I might have been in the same store or stores that day.

  18. I love the new Roscoe Mitchell release. It is interesting to me that "Care Free", which made an appearance at the end of Side 1 of the 1980 Art Ensemble of Chicago LP "Full Force", was recorded at Roscoe Mitchell's earliest group recording.

  20. This game has completely changed from the one I started. That's OK, it should be fun, and whatever people want to do to have fun, is fine with me. However, the game that I started was visual matches only, not album titles, not words, not meanings of album titles, not interpretations or plays on words of album titles, not similar subject matter. It was supposed to be a picture matching a picture exactly. If there was a hat, a man with a beard, a peach and a door pictured in a album cover, then the next match had to be either a picture of a hat, a picture of a man with a beard, a picture of a peach or a picture of a door--nothing else. So now we have a very different game. Maybe this one is better. One thing I do find interesting. The same exact game started at about the same time on another music forum. I copied the idea from the other forum. At the other forum, some of the same album covers have been posted, with very different matches than what we have had.
  21. I like them a lot. Only in jazz is an element of fun in the music considered something bad.
