Yes, he's my elder for three years. That gives him some respectability...

Not the nicest way to start this season...

After several years following up with the same discussion (lack of originality et al), I still can't understand why some critics -as well as some organissimo members (intersect when needed)- strongly dislike Eric Alexander. For me, he is a marvellous and very gifted player. Actually, to a certain degree I enjoy his discs as much as those of the originals he is supposedly imitating. True that he hasn't discovered a new planet, but who has evaded either Trane or Rollins influence during the last 50 years??? And what's wrong with Harry Allen??? BTW, many thanks to Milestones for opening up this discussion. Good chance to refresh my very limited knowledge of the current scene, as regards tenor sax players.

As for Elvin Jones' remembrance that he played with Duke for one week and a half, I am afraid he exaggerated a bit. Louis Bellson left the band before Duke and his men started the European tour (first concert in Lisbon, February 23, 1966). Skeets Marsh was hired to replace Bellson during this European tour, but suddenly Ellington decided to replace him, calling on Elvin Jones to join him for the January 28 Frankfurt concert. Ellington then changed his mind, and Jones returned to the US after playing only 4 concerts with the Ellington troupe: Frankfurt (January 28, Jahrhunderthalle), Paris (January 29, Salle Pleyel), Milan (January 30, Teatro Lirico) and Geneva (January 31, Victoria Hall). Sam Woodyard was brought to Europe for the February 2 Zurich concert (in fact other sources state that he already replaced Jones in the January 31, Geneva concert), and the rest of the tour. Marsh left the band when it returned to the US, and Woodyard, who was supposed to only be subbing for Bellson, stayed on. (sources: New DESOR, TDWAW and the DEMS Bulletin)

Great minds think alike! I didn’t include Alexander because he had been mentioned before, but for sure he is in my list!

Grant Stewart Scott Hamilton Scott Robinson Harry Allen And as for an European tenor, primarily avant-garde but all-rounder, I would strongly recommend my fellow countryman Ernesto Aurignac.

The January 20, 1947 is Tatum's only session for RCA (as per Laubich/Spencer discography). I haven't been able to find any additional data on this session in James Lester 'Too Marvelous For Words' Tatum biography.

Stuart Kremsky kindly researched Fantasy vaults for me some 12 years ago, but he was not able to find the tapes nor even a reference in the label listings.

I used to be the kind of jazz freak scoring each album, artist... and making lists and rankings. Now I simply try to enjoy the music in the limited time span I can allocate to jazz... The older, the wiser!

Yet a third similar thread: if any member has access to April/May/June, 1984 issues of US jazz magazines, I'd be very grateful if he could check concert/festival listings and reviews for me.
