  9. Have any other users of Yahoo.co.uk had problems accessing their mailboxes this afternoon? Since about three o'clock, every time I try to log on, I get a page cannot be displayed message after entering password. I get this on my mailbox and my wife's. But I don't get it on my Yahoo.com mailbox, which is working as usual. So it ain't my browser or my machine. I've used the .com mailbox to e-mail the problem to Yahoo but it normally takes them forever to respond. Wondered if anyone else was getting this problem or is it just lil ol me. MG

  13. I just saw this stuff that Pete Fallico published on the Doodlin' lounge last month. http://www.doodlinlounge.com/artist.html Never heard of the guy - but he's apparently made two albums. I've looked on All Music Guide, CD Baby, CD Universe and Amazon.com but there's nothing. To judge by what Pete Fallico says, this man can play! Anyone know of him? Where to get his albums? Anything? MG

  15. One of the best things to do, I suspect, would be to put a link from the Wikipedia entry to the Pete Fallico piece on John. http://www.doodlinlounge.com/Stories/Patton.html MG
  16. Freddie Roach - "Johnny's coming home no more" from the album "Mocha motion". MG
  17. I reckon Bu was one of the greatest organists ever. She had a thick, visceral, sound that just got through. She made only one album as a leader - "Ms Bu" on Muse 5033 in 1973. But what an album! What a sound she had! and what intensity of emotion! And when she sang, it went straight to your gut! She was born on 23 July 1933 in Corpus Christi, Texas. So it would have been her birthday today. But she died in 1989. She had one of the hardest lives I've ever heard of any musician having. Some people have way too many dues to pay. Pete Fallico recorded her story here http://www.doodlinlounge.com/Stories/Pleasant.html Pete says she also recorded with Arthur Prysock, but I can't trace any of those recordings. Anyone know them? MG
  18. That's probably the version on the Theresa 2LP set 'Journey To The One'. I think he had previously done one on Arista. It might be that. MG
  19. OK - I'm joining Frank Carson Johnny Carson Son House MG
  20. No wonder the original Blue Note LPs are becoming so hard to get and so expensive over here these days ! There's a bit of coverage of this soul jazz DJ thing on the 'Jazz Britannia' TV series that the BBC did some time ago. All started up around 1982-83 with jazz-influenced groups like 'Rip Rig and Panic' and 'Pigbag' becoming popular with the dance crows. Heck, I even remember Pigbag doing a jazz freakout on 'Top of the Pops'. Wasn't Sun Ra's 'Nuclear War' on Y Records also popular with this crowd? A couple of others that you wouldn't expect to be popular were Pharoah Sanders' "You gotta have freedom" (not sure which version), Dizzy Gillespie's "Mas que nada" and Gigi Gryce's "Minority". MG
  21. Jug made two jam sessions with very similar titles in '56 and '57. The '56 session was called "Hi fi jam session" PR7060, but reissued on PR7781 under the title "Jammin' with Gene". The OJC reissue (OJCCD 211) refers to it as "Jammin' with Gene". The '57 job was called "Jammin' in hi fi with Gene Ammons" PR7110 and was later reissued as "The twister". The '56 session features Art Taylor on drums and squeaky hi hat pedal. If you have PR7781, it's referred to in the sleeve notes. Both sleeve notes are on the CD. Ira Gitler didn't seem to have noticed the squeak. MG
  22. I'm also adding a for JJ's rendition of I Waited For You -- just beautiful playing by a master. I've just started reading Fred Wesley's autobiography. He talks about the first time he heard J J - it was the "J is for Jazz" LP, and he says it wrecked him. Hm, should I reconsider this box, I wonder. The only J J I've got is the Yokohama concert with Nat Adderley - that's a little on the hard bop side for me. Is that typical J J? MG
  23. ... and if you believe THAT, Noj has a freeway in Santa Monica he'll sell you, too. Oh really... But Noj was wearing a thick anorak... MG
  24. I've seen it, too, but can't remember the connection. MG
