  2. What he said. If you mean to infer that popularity has anything to do with quality... well then good luck to you. I have always assumed that the "faces" were just that, the facades that the masses came to stare at while the foundations on which they sat were appreciated by the handful that knew better. Bill

  11. You need to find a good Hungarian for the proper answer. If I'm planning ahead I'll toss the whole bottle in the freezer, otherwise a little ice does help the medicine go down.

  14. I have always used compilations as samplers, to get a taste of a style of music or of a particular artist I don't know anything about. They are kind of like hors d’oeuvre, a good place to start before you hit the entree. One of my first exposures to blue note was the compilation Straight No Chaser "the most popular, most sampled songs from the vaults of blue note". I have not listened to it in 5 years at least, but that was my intro to Blakey, Silver, Donald Byrd, and others.

  18. gotta look that one up. thanks! I almost tossed this on earlier today, so hey it's spinning now. I can't speak for Hawkins, but free improv was old hat for Manne. Check out The Three and The Two from 1954.
  19. Thanks for all the info, I will be keeping my eyes open for the sides you mention. Bill

  21. Not having any Jack Teagarden, I picked up Jazz Maverick! on a whim. The trombone playing was great as I expected, but it was his singing just floored me. I found his casual tone and somewhat gravely voice very genuine and touching in an early Tom Waits kind of way. I wonder if his other Roulette sides are in this same vein, or where else in his catalog I might look to find some similar stuff. Thanks in advance, Bill
