It's hard for me to put into words how much this man's music has meant and will continue to mean to me. RIP

My LPs and CDs are retentively filed alphabetically by artist last name or by group name. They are then organized by earliest recording date (if known) or by release date (this means that a few titles get shuffled around when I get additional info). Titles by two artists are filed under the first artist's last name ("John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" is filed under Coltrane, "Duke Ellington and John Coltrane" is filed under Ellington). I used to separate by genre, but I don't anymore (except, for some reason, for classical and holiday. Those I do file separately. They're even kept in a completely separate location from the rest of my collection. I'm not sure why). What would you do with the Storyville with "Bobby Brookmeyer - Zoot Sims" on the spine and "Zoot Sims and Bob Brookmeyer on the front cover?

Our first dance was Louis and Ella's rendition of "You Go To My Head", after that the emphasis was more on up-tempo dancing. Elvis, James Brown, Digable Planets, whatever it took to keep the bodies moving. Last song was Tom Wait's "The Piano Has Been Drinking". I have heard people say that they didn't really enjoy their own wedding, that's too bad I had a blast at ours. Prior to the dancing we had a string quartet, but if I was going to go with pre-recorded I would make sure to have a lot of Ellington on the list.

A family had twin boys whose only resemblance to each other was their looks. If one felt it was too hot, the other thought it was too cold. If one said the TV was too loud, the other claimed the volume needed to be turned up. Opposite in every way, one was an eternal optimist, the other a doom & gloom pessimist. To which his optimist twin replied, "There's got to be a pony in here somewhere!"

Smooth sheen is a good description for Skylark, but not with the usual negative connotations. It has a great version of Take Ten and Mr. Szabo fits in nicely.

Last week I picked up 3/4 on Watt and have really been enjoying it. I became curious about her music through pieces recorded by Paul Bley and Jimmy Giuffre. Sometimes her work is a bit melodramatic for my tastes but I am looking forward to exploring whatever of hers I can chase down. I wish I was better able to put into words what attracts me to certain music, or even really understand why I like one piece of music better than another. When listening to music I really connect with, my response is more visual than anything else, sort of like an evolving abstract painting, fleeting patterns textures and colors. The ability of some people at this forum to go from music to words in mind boggling to me. I am very grateful as it has opened my ears and head to some very beautiful music I may have otherwise dismissed.

Appalachian State University is HOT HOT HOT

I have a pair of SR-60's and have not been overly impressed, although they were an upgrade from the pair I was borrowing from United Airlines. They are light and comfortable but they don't give me that "close your eyes and you are there" feeling. I have read somewhere about people who cut a whole in the ear pads to provide more detail. I'm not sure what to expect for a headphone in this price range, but if I were to do it again I would probably save my pennies a little longer and get something nicer.

I graduated high school in 86' and bought a lot of music, I could limit to 3 favorites for a couple of types of music. Ahhh looks like a Bonny Dune offering there. I use to live not to far from the winery. Cardinal Zin was always my favorite from those folks. Currently sipping on a little Old Weller Antique with a single lonely ice cube.

Four years ago we decided as a family to put quality of life ahead of quantity of income. We packed up the family left the bay area. Our income was half of what it had been and less than a third of when we had both been working. Scaling back on travel and clothes wasn't fun but didn't kill us. My music is mostly acquired by trading in records and stereo equipment I get from thrift stores for store credit at my local used vinyl shop. Not ideal, but i get what I need. Food was and is the killer. Once you getting use to eating fresh healthy food it is hard to go back. If I was offered a $500 gift certificate to Nordstrom's or the local market that focuses on locally sourced and organic foods I wouldn't blink and just pray that some fresh morel mushrooms would be waiting in the produce section.

I was recently introduced to the music of George Crumb via the Brodsky Quartet recording of “Black Angels” from 1993. I really like this a lot. Where should I look next? Is there another recording of this same piece that people prefer? Is George Crumb’s other music in a similar vein? If so does it matter where you start? Are there any other similar composers I should investigate? Thanks, BB
