And do tell me about Rita Reys, only know the name and a few of the records.

Quite a long time ago you asked this Jim, but I happen to hit this topic just now. I have got a few quotes for you:

She sounds like a drunk guy (on Nina Simone)

Off key and a horrible timing (on Anita O’Day)

She really doesn’t do a thing to me (on Billie Holiday)

Overrated and she can’t sing (on Sarah Vaughan)

The worst jazz singer: she can’t hold one note (on Astrid Gilberto)

The only one she could give a break was Ella.

Rita Reys was a horrible, overly arrogant women. And she wasn’t all that great herself too. Small minded, the type of person that does not fit into free art forms like jazz.

A great doc, I remember watching it a few times in the early Youtube days when it  was in 9 min parts (along with other docs like Reflections, New York-Paris  (ARTE,1998) and Earl "Fatha" Hines (ATV,1975)).

Travellin' In Soul-Time with Waldron and Lee has been recorded around the same time of this doc and is a beauty.

Indeed. And I think also Explorations to the Mth Degree with Max Roach. Nice stuff!

  3. anyone seen this beautiful doc? Nice interviews with Reggie Workman, Andrew Cyrille, Steve Lacy, Max Roach and Jeanne Lee.

And Mal himself... what a sweet guy. Such a humble person.

I agree!  I've recommended these records to Mosaic for reissue several times. I think Waldron's Japanese Victor recordings would make a SUPERB set!  And there are so many others too.

    No dice so far. :(

That would be a hell of a Mosaic set. And, looking on discogs, enough people would be very interested.

I have always understood that Mal had an almost rockstar status in Japan. This makes it even more that almost his full discography is out of print and quite a lot of records are hard to get.

I knew about this record (memorable title!), but I didn't realize that it was an ECM release.

Pim, do you have Waldron's records on Tutu?  I've always wanted to get them... but I've never heard any of them.

I think it was supposed to be the first ECM release but for some reason it was released by ‘Globe’. Do not exactly remember what the story was.

i’ve got three records on Tutu: Mal, Dance and Soul, Mal, Verve, Black & Blue and Quadrologue at Utopia vol.1. These are great sessions especially the last one mentioned: that one is steamin! Not as great as his ‘70’s and ‘80’s stuff but still: All very much worth having. I think most of it is still available for reasonable prices at Discogs.

    👍Super catch👍 .... congrats !!

Thanks Soulpope!! I still cannot believe that this early ‘70’s stuff (Spanish Bitch, The Call, Reminiscent Suite) is so rare and  not reissued except for a Japanese vinyl reissue 40 years ago. This is absolutely unique and stunning music that’s deserves so much more recognition. And even now that these records got some of a ‘cult’ status by some collectors, there is still no reissue program. Plenty of Mal 1 reissues though 😂

  6. Thanks for the info! Just when you think you probably know all the stuff on the usual labels you discover something new. Unfortunately P Vine is expensive stuff indeed, that is why I asked tips for I do not want to make the wrong choices with this kind of money.

  7. In my never ending search for new jazz I hit P-Vine’s ‘Black Ark Series’ on Discogs.

    https://www.discogs.com/label/593414-Black-Ark-Series

I am a big fan of the 70s spiritual jazz movement, the labels like Strata East, India Navigation and Muse. To my own shame I must admit that, with a few exceptions, I don’t know any of the artists on the Black Ark Series.

Anyone here does? Any recommendations? It seems like the stuff for me :)

  8. Yes according  to jazzdisco.org there is quite a lot of unissued studio material too. Unfortunately people do not feel the moral obligation to share this music with the world. Unfortunate cause who benefits if it’s on some dusty shelf somewhere. I do not believe that was Trane’s intention anyway.

What I meant was, I think I have pretty much everything from the "1963 New Directions" set except the Newport stuff. So I looked up the Impulse album (which also includes 1965) and it was only about $10, so I ordered it ASAP! :g

Enjoy! It’s a killer! (Both sessions are, but the 65 is from outer space:D)

  9. Yeah there are no sources that claim this is a bootleg nor are there sources that claim it is legit. The blog you are referring to: the blog writer is claiming the release is remastered from the original master tapes...

    It is probably legit because:

1 the sound quality is quite good and sounds professional

2 it was probably remastered from the original tapes

it is probably a boot because:

1 the cover is a very weird choice....

2 the rather vague record label.

anyway the music is unbelievably great.
