  1. Ordered this one immediately at our local record store. ‘Pure Pleasure Records’ is exactly that what their name states: a pure pleasure. Using the original master tapes for remastering, these sound absolutely stunning. As a matter of fact: I am replacing some of my German Bellaphon cd’s with these vinyl reissues as I really don’t like the sound of them ( Harpers Capra Black sounds dreadful). This label is making some rare Strata East records available again including their original artwork (front and back). A big plus for me is that they pay dues to the original owners of the material.

Only thing that is wondering me is why they reissue this Tolliver session under Strata East. The original was issued on Polydor or Black Lion wasn’t it?

I am still hoping that after Strata East, they are going to start with the India Navigition catalogue.

Oh and Barbara Donald 👍 she caught my attention from the very first note on Simmons’s ESP stuff. A very good trumpeter with a great sense of timing, space and melody. A miracle she is so obscure.

  2. A very happy birthday To you mr Haynes. You are a true legend of all time! Now what should  I play in your honor:

    - Lester Young’s Aladdin records?

    - Sonny Rollins Sound of Sonny?

    - Some Getz’ Roost Records?

    - Shepp’s Way Ahead?

    - Pharoah Sanders’ Thembi

    - Or perhaps Some Petrucciani?

    - Some We Three with Phineas

    - Some Bud Powell, Monk, Bird, Coltrane or perhaps Clifford Jordan’s in the World?

My god, with who didn’t he play? Oh and by the way: his drumming skills on ‘After The Crescent’ of Coltrane’s Dear Old Stockholm.... so ridiculously good! And you must be damn good to fill in for Elvin Jones.

Any opinions on the Mal Waldron Volume 2 (11 CD) box?

I loved Volume 1, am considering Vol. 2 but am always wary of such large boxes. Four of the discs are essential (6 Monk's Compositions, the solo album and the 2 Lacy duets), and I'm sure I'd enjoy the trio album ("Colline"). The 2 discs with Chico Freeman and Enrico Rava respectively seem at least interesting, but I'd probably never listen to the 2 vocal albums (Kim Parker, Judi Silvano), and the 2 discs with David Friesen are complete question marks.

Well as a Waldron completist I want this of course. The Lacy duets, Update and Our Collines a Treasure are essential Waldron. The duets with Friesen are very nice. The work with Freeman and Rava is not so good as you might expect and the works with the singers are truly not my taste. Still: enough interesting stuff especially for that price!

  4. Does anyone own the 2008 unofficial release of the Pharoah LP? I wonder what the sound quality is like.

Dont get me wrong, I never buy unofficial stuff  but I really don’t see any other way to buy this music in a physical form.

  5. That is some unique material thanks! I love the free jazz Ibrahim of the ‘60s, the more African oriented of the ‘70s and ‘80s but also the more melancholic Abdullah of the ‘90s and 00’s. With 31 records by him in my collection he’s an absolute favorite of me.

Saw him last year in Belgium and it was indescribable. One of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.

  6. I have got some cd’s for sale, shipping is 10 euros within Europe ( 3 to Holland, 8 to Belgium), and a ridiculous 20 euro to the USA. Ridiculous I know. But I can’t help it, it’s the Dutch postage service.

  7. Thanks a lot for these tips! I know Amazon, allmusic and dustygroove but never checked their upcoming releases... how stupid. Now I have spotted the ‘Paper Man’ reissue on vinyl that is going to cost me Some money!

i inreed have a section of favorite artists I regularly check and the cdjapan link is in my bookmarks :)

  8. Okay, so I am trying to follow all the new releases and reissues. Yet, still I am surprised a lot of times by all the new releases or reissues mentioned here. That makes me a bit afraid that I miss beautiful brand new reissues and new releases all the time.

My question to you fellow board members is: how do you keep up with all the new reissues and releases? Is there a good way to follow all this new stuff or do people have the same problem as me? Would like to have some tips!

  9. I really avoid these labels like the plague (is that an expression?) why?

    1. Part from the shitty sound quality and perhaps skipping the rightful copyright owner, what bugs me the most is the poor packaging. The reason I buy cd’s or lp’s in this digital era IS the packaging. It’s the extra’s that make me wanna buy the cd version. If I only want the music, I download some MP3’s. And the packaging of all these labels truly suck: mostly no booklets, no photographs, wrong artwork, wrong seasionagraphy, wrong dates and personell. I especially hate the 100 albums on one cd versions. And come on its about quality to me not quantity. I do not want to buy all Harold Land albums at once on 4 cd’s. I want to start with The Fox, if I like it buy/try some more, read a little bout Land, the sessions, the music.

    2. The awful sound quality. Admitted: one is better than the other. The Proper boxes I own are pretty good. The Lonehills and Definitives suck, not to speak of the Not Now releases.

    3. The weird and just bad choices they make in combining sessions. The ‘bonus’ sessions you don’t really want.

    4. What I really hate the most is that it’s this cheap garbage that fill all the record stores. Not only that, they have almost taken over the complete jazz reissue program (Japan excluded). And I don’t like these crappy releases so I have to buy the expansive stuff on Discogs....

The only label that is an exception to me is Proper and JSP to some extend. I have got the JSP Django box and that is truly awesome! Nice compilation nice sound. The Propers I own are Coleman Hawkins’ Bebop Years and Tatum’s Grand Piano Master. Both a very good way to explore some of their earlier work. And the Proper booklets... they looke a little amateurish but hey they are there! Photographs, discography, some nice stories it at least looks like it’s been made with some love and attention for the music.

Apart from these I say: burn them! Burn them!

  10. Anyone Some thoughts on the Strata East reissues?

I have recently bought on Pure pleasure records:

    - Cecil Payne’s Zodiac

    - Charles Tollivers Music Inc

    On Everland:

    - Charlie Rouses Two is One

Both of these labels seem legit and I must say they have done a wonderful job. Sound is very good and it is reissued as a Strata East, with original artwork.

But most of all: for me it is an affordable way to finally get these records.
