  1. I've been contacted by two different promoters. The problem is they are extremely expensive. $2500 for 8 weeks of promoting one record on 100 jazz stations. Considering our last disc cost $6000, including hiring Ron, studio time and mixing, and the cost of 1,000 discs, that's a lot of money. We broke even on our first run of 1,000 discs. We are not anywhere near breaking even on our second run. Add $2500 and we're further in the hole. It's just not possible unless we can get a label behind us. My immediate plan is to get the next CD (and the current one for that matter) in the hands of the guys that have syndicated shows, like Parlocha. We already got our record into the hands of Jim Wilke (who also listed the album as one of his top 2003 releases) and he's heard on over 60 NPR stations nationwide. Not bad. Bonnie Grice and Parlocha are the other big ones I'd like to get.
  2. Part of what makes him great. He sounds like himself! I USED to think that way, but not anymore. I've been listening to Metheny since 1975. I've seen him several times in concert during those 30 years. He used to be at the forefront of modern jazz. His significance has taken a rather large downfall over the last 10 years or so. There's a reason why true straight ahead players like Kenny Burrell, Jimmy Bruno, Peter Bernstein, Jack Wilkens, Bucky Pizzarelli, Howard Alden, (damn lazy pop-star) George Benson....... sound so good. Because they are straight ahead jazz guitarists. BTW, "fusion" genius Kurt Rosenwinkel is a fabulous straight ahead jazz guitarIST, as heard on his CD "Intuit". Implicit in the reference is that I believe him to be a far superior straight ahead player than "fusion" genius Pat Metheny. This post makes no sense. Metheny "used" to be at the forefront of modern jazz but now that he's not (in your opinion) he is irrelevant? One could easily say the same thing about that list of yours... all those cats, with the exception of Benson who rarely plays straight ahead anymore, are all stylistically similair and that style is one that was formed 50 years ago or more. Talk about being irrelevant. Not to say those players aren't good players or to say I don't enjoy listening to them (I love Peter Bernstein) but it seems like you're contradicting yourself.
  3. Done and done.
  4. Where's the fun in that? Party pooper.
  5. Bummer. Return lines suck. We're having the extended family(families) Christmas later today, but my wife and Zora and I just enjoyed our little festivities. Zora got some much needed clothes as well as small Elmo and Cookie Monster stuffed toys. Funny, she seemed to prefer the bows and ribbon more than the toys. I bought my wife some new active wear (and very sexy active wear at that, if I do say so) and a nice book on organizational ideas for the house (kind of for both of us) and also new earthenware (definitely for both of us) since our dishes have been driving us both crazy. She got me some sweats (MSU sweatshirt! yeah!), some steak knives which I needed, and a new cutting board! Woo hoo! Oh yeah, and a video from the New Yankee Workshop on how to build this awesome bookcase which I'm going to adapt into a wine/bar system. Good stuff! I asked for some music on my families' Christmas list, so I'll probably be getting some of that this afternoon (some more Tull, Joe... watch out!) Merry Christmas everyone! And if you don't celebrate Christmas as such, you know what I'm saying.
  6. I realize time constraints are an issue, but not to even mention Jimmy Smith is a crime. Leaving out an entire instrument and sub-genre, especially one that had a profound effect on modern music (not just jazz, but blues, rock, country, etc), is simply irresponsable.
  7. Thanks, marcello! Organ and vibes, one of my favorite combinations!!!!
  8. Um, Clem... beautiful can be both light and dark. It's a very open word.
  9. Good call, ss1!
  10. Only $100,000? Where do I send the check?
  11. Oops! When I made the new forum everything got shifted. Would you folks rather have it back towards the bottom?
  12. Here's another one I found from 2001 when Jimmy released Dot Com Blues. This one is even more funny! It's pretty obvious the interviewer is way out of his league. Haha! Fuckin' brilliant!
  13. Not sure if this has been printed here before, but I found this while perusing the web. Kind of funny!
  14. Bumpus. I added direct links to the other holiday tunes in my first post, back on page 1! Merry Christmas!
  15. Wow. I walk into the living room today and I see this: I recorded a little bit of what she was playing: Zora plays the B! Merry Christmas!!!
  16. The same could be said of jazz itself.
  17. Sure! Who do you think would most dig our sound?
  18. Ok, so I had an ulterior motive in starting this forum and that was gather information about your local jazz station(s). Do they have any local DJs or do they just use the syndicated shows like Bob Parlocha? (love that guy!) If so, which ones are your favorites? I'm hoping to put together a database so we can get our next CD into the right hands and get some airplay! Thank you for your help!
  19. I thought it would be cool for our members who also happen to be part of the broadcast industry to share information about their upcoming shows, archives, special events, etc. Also, feel free to list your favorite jazz station past or present! B-)
  20. That may be, but if you're going to spend a whole class on fusion and another class on the Young Lions, then you have time to mention Jimmy Smith. I mean, the man has been on the scene since 1954 and his Blue Note and Verve records sold like mad and inspired a whole new sub-genre of the music, as well as influencing everyone who's touched a Hammond organ since. Maybe I'm imagining things, but I think something else it at play here.
  21. That's lame. I mean, they're probably trying to protect their "asset" but not letting someone who loves the instrument play it is stupid. Sorry to hear about that.
