Disney to Begin Renting 'Self-Destructing' DVD's
Christiern replied to Templejazz's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
I hope this fails, just like Divx did. -
Christiern is the actual (old Danish) spelling of my first namee. It combines Christ (funny, because I am an Atheist) with iron (iern or jern, in Danish). My last name, had my father followed Icelandic custom, would have been Þórðarsson, taking his first name, Þórður and adding "son." Instead, he dropped an "s" from his own surname, Albertsson, and registered the cropped result as a family name. As you may have figured out, in Iceland--where I was born--a person's surname is the father's first name with either "son" or "dóttir" added. Thus there really are no family names, and everybody is listed in the phone book by their first name.

All three, actually, but mostly state and city. Even so, Federal cutbacks have a domino effect. The sad reality is that, despite campaign promises and subsequent assurances, a lot of children are being left behind.

Mr Christiern always advances an Ultra Liberal position, yet with this particular example of censorship he is silent. I do not want to place Mr Christiern in a position of hypocrisy therefore I expect that Mr Christiern will want to inform B3er that my thread of April 10 about Mr Christiern should be unlocked and that any further satirical items about Mr Christiern should not be censored. Anything less by Mr Christiern would be inconsistent in the light of his Ultra Liberalism. What an infantile reaction.I agree with connoisseur's take on this, but B3er can do as he wishes with his board. It is not up to me or anyone else to tell him what to do--we all have the option of taking our pixels elsewwhere. Gee's attempt at satire was, IMO, innocuous and, as we see, eminently forgettable. I shall now proceed to forget it again.
-
Thanks for that link, weizen. I had actually forgotten this. I didn't realize that it was ssupposed to be a "satire;" I found it neither funny nor offensive--a little childish, perhaps. Anyway, I most certainly never complained about it. Mr. Gee has jumped to the wrong conclusion. I had, in fact forgotten about that photo--not a bad modification, if I may say so myself.

Be careful with those tongue-in-cheek toilet seat remarks!

Ok, Dan, so you find nothing wrong with a black person supporting a group that is less than supportive of black people--in fact, a group that is making a miserable life even more so for many blacks. (I do a lot of work with black early child care organizations, and I can tell you that current Republican policies and actions have severely cut into funding). Now, whenever a Jewish person criticizes Sharon or finds fault with the current Israeli government, he/she is labeled a "self-hater." Why, then, is C. Rice not a self-hater? Do different standards apply? BTW, to answer your question, people can, in my opinion have principles and totally disagree with my viewpoints. In fact, I think one can even be a principled whore (in the "berigan" definition of the term). I know a couple of black Republicans, but neither supports Bush and his people--they remain Republican, however, because they see the current conservative christian right leadership as something that will pass. Rice, on the other hand, is an active member of that rather extreme right-wing group. Have I clarified my perspective?

An interesting article. Some very good and, unfortunately, on the mark point made re white dominance in the jazz media. It reminds me of a call I received from New York's Channel 13 (PBS) around 1964, when I was general manager of WBAI. "We need to borrow one of your Negroes," the man said. I thought it was a put-on, but it wasn't. The station had arranged to interview H. Rap Brown, who would only allow himself to be interviewed by a black person, of which 13, apparently, had none. I asked Charles Hobson if he wanted the job, and he jumped at the chance. Unfortunately, Channel 13 made up the questions, which were decidedly lacking in insight. After a few questions, Brown looked at poor Charlie and said something like, "What kind of shit is this, man?" BTW Charles Hobson subsequently became a producer on Black Journal, and of the series From Jump Street.

Well, there was the time John asked me if he could have a day off to prepare a special dinner at his house. Someone had given him a bottle or two of Dom Perignon and he had been saving them for a special occasions. That special occasion was a dinner to which he had invited a group of friends/colleagues, including Leonard Bernstein, Thomas Schippers, and Michael Tilson Thomas. The day after the dinner, I asked him how it had gone, but he didn't want to talk about it. I finally got it out of him, however: he had spent the whole day cooking and setting up a festive dinner table. The guests arrived, the food was on the table, and John ceremoniously popped the cork on the old Dom. Unfortunately, the cork flew out, hit a chandelier above the table, shattered it, and rained a shower of glass onto the food. They ended up going to a restaurant.

Apropos John Corigliano. He was my Music Director when I ran a New York radio station in the early 1960s. One day, he included John Cage's Cartridge Music in the morning concert, which he programmed. For those who may not be familiar with this piece, it consists of wired phonograph cartridges being pulled across the floor, producing a sound that only the most vivid of imaginations might find remotely reminiscent of music. The phones lit up as people called to find out when out transmitter would be fixed--they thought we were off the air. I told John that, Cage being an acknowledged composer, it was ok to program such works as Cartridge Music, but not in the morning and not without some kind of explanation. John told me that he had been thinking of quitting, because he wanted to get unemployment compensation and write a piano concerto. Would I please fire him? I agreed to do that, and when the unemployment office turned him down, he appealed and I agreed to speak for him at a hearing. We cited" irreconcilable artistic differences," and John's unemployment was approved. A couple of years later, he sent me an LP of his piano concerto. BTW, shortly after John left, we took on a new assistant (glorified file clerk, actually) in the music department. She loved works like Cartridge Music--her name was Yoko Ono.

Well, I don't know Ms. Rice personally, so you may be right, Dan--she may well have been unprincipled all along.
-
I wish someone would refresh my memory. I have no recollection of a post satirizing me, much less of making a formal complaint about it. In fact, I have been called all sorts of insulting names on this board (and elsewhere), but I have never launched a single formal complaint about it.
-
For (seemingly sex-obsessed) "berigan's" edification, I submit the following common definition of "whore": A person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain. That perfectly describes how many people feel about C. Rice.
-
At the ceremony, he will be introduced by George Avakian.

Your points are well taken--you get no argument from me.

I make regular trips between JC, AAJ and Organ--each has its own characteristics, some salient, some less so. Staying away from AAJ just because DEEP is doing his thing makes little sense. We are, in fact, seeing a more restrained, less offensive DEEP over there. Besides, he really is having his fun, and--to be sure--he has his own concept of fun. DEEP also has a thorough knowledge of early to bop jazz, which he often enhances a BBS with. I consider him to be a good friend, but that does not mean that I support everything he posts--still, like I said, he has his mellower moments, and we are seeing them now at AAJ.

Looking for some good humorous novels
Christiern replied to Big Al's topic in Miscellaneous - Non-Political
After all these years, this one remains humorous, IMO: -
As usual, "berigan" has taken things out of context and twisted them to suit his own agenda. I have referred to Rice as Condosleaza (or something like that), a long time ago, and I believe I once suggested that she was prostituting herself--i.e. by going along with a program that clearly does not have in mind the interest of black people. That is not the same as calling someone a prostitute, at least not in the usual sense of the term.
-
I see a consensus forming, one that gains validity with every "berigan" post, with every flap of his portrait's wings.
-
You are right, Brad. I was hoping that my slight modification would make "berigan" see the error of his ways.
-
A closer look...
-
You're right.
-
You may have noticed that "berigan" often uses Bush regime tactics. Since his posts generally are without substance (or childish to the extreme), he will adopt animated avatars and attention-getting signatures. The main objective seems to be to get noticed, and he has accomplished that. Occasionally, he will chime in about (white) jazz people, but only occasionally.

I agree, Dan. Besides, lifting pictures from AARP isn't nice.
