  1. 1. Jovino Santos Neto, Aquelas Coisas Todas (All of Those Things) from Veja O Som See the Sound, Adventure Music AM 1063 2. Santos – piano, Davide Sanchez – tenor. Lon mentioned this on one of the more recent pages of the Suggest me some Brazilian thread. Its a two disc set of duets, one recorded in the US and one in Brazil. Each track features a different guest with Santos.

    2. Jack Mouse Group, LaPorta from Range of Motion, Origin Records 82633. Scott Robinson – tenor, Art Davis – Trumpet, John McLean – guitar, Kelly Sill – bass, Mouse – drums. I only recognized Scott Robinson and John McLean when I picked this up. One thing I really liked about this was the Take the Coltrane quote in the tenor solo.

    3. Eric Hofbauer and the Infrared Band, These Two Things from Level, Creative Nation Music CNM 020. Hofbauer – guitar, Kelly Roberge – tenor, Sean Farias – bass, Miki Matsuki – drums. This disc has really grown on me. I can see where it can strike people as cold but it just speaks to me and I really dig Kelly Roberge. I picked a disc of solo music by Hofbauer, American Grace, that I also am taking a liking to.

    4. Ryan Keberle, Something Speaking from Double Quartet, Alternate Side Records ASR 002. Ryan Keberle – trombone, Adam Birnbaum – piano, Matt Brewer – Bass, Brad Wentworth – drums, Michael Rodriguez – trumpet, Chris Komer – French horn, Marshall Gilkes – trombone, Jose Davila – tuba. A little out of my ordinary as I usually prefer reeds. I like the sound this band gets.

    5. The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All Stars, Ole from Dizzy’s World Shanachie 5060. Jon Faddis – trumpet, Don Braden – tenor, Mulgrew Miller – piano, John Lee – bass, Ignacio Berroa – drums, Chuck Loeb – guiter. The surprise for me here is Chuck Loeb on guitar.

    6. Sahib Shihab, Di-Da from & Sahib Shihab the Danish Radio Jazz Group, Octav OKCD 1111. Bent Jaedig – tenor, Palle Mikkelborg – trumpet, Sahib Shihab – baritone. This is a date I knew about but hadn’t heard prior to its recent release on cd (2008). You know how you sometimes build records up in your mind and then you hear it and it doesn’t live up to your expectations? Well, for me this one lived up to expectations.

    7. Alex Harding and Blutopia, Spirit Take My Hand from The Calling, Jazzaway Records JARCD 017. Harding – baritone, Lucian Ban – piano, Brad Jones – bass, Nasheet Waita – drums. I have a thing for baritone. This disc can get a little outside at points.

    8. Barry Elmes Quintet, The Reincarnation of Ratboy from Redshift, Cornerstone Records CRST CD 137. Elmes – drums, Mike Murley – tenor, Kevin Turcotte – trumpet, Reg Schwager – guitar, Steve Wallce –n bass, Vanessa Redgrave – organ, Kelly Jefferson – flute. In the last few years I have been listening to several guys from Canada. This disc is one of those that I play all the way through. I will likely pick up more by Elmes.

    9. Alan Ferber, Fables from Music for Nonet and Strings/Chamber Songs, Sunnyside SSC1254, Ferber – trombone, Scott Wendholt – trumpet, Jon Gordon – alto, John Ellis – tenor, Douglas Yates – bass clarinet, Nate Ridley – guitar, Bryn Roberts – piano, Matt Clohesy – bass, Mark Ferber – drums plus a 9 piece string section. I am definitely going to pick the other Nonet cd’s by Ferber.

    10. Jim Alfredson, Along Came John from Dirty Fingers a Tribute to Big John Patton, Big O Records 2418. - Alfredson – organ, Randy Gelispie – drums, Ralph Tope – guitar, Dwight Adams – Vibes, Mark Kieme – tenor. Hey, my name is on this production!

    11. Marty Ehrlich’s Traveler’s Tales, Rhymes from Malinke’s Dance, Omnitone 12003. Ehrlich – alto, Tony Malaby – tenor, Jerome Harris – bass, Bobby Previte – drums.

    So, thanks everyone for playing.

  2. I haven't had much interaction with famous musicians but I did have short conversations with both James Williams and Frank Strozier. Both made me feel totally at ease and made quite an impression on me.

  3. Hey Thom, thanks for playing. As usual your comments are interesting and insightful. You are right about 5, 6 and 10. Regarding 3, I knew when I included this that it might not be well recieved and I can't articulate why I like it so much, but I do. Spent a few minutes trying to see if the tenor man on 8 was an NEC grad, he has a music degree but not from there. Glad you enjoyed 9, another track I felt would leave some people cold.

  4. Hey Spontooneous,

    1. None of the people on tenor that you guessed but someone with at least as high a proflie as Mintzer and Berg, maybe just a bit behind Potter.

    2. Since we are pretty late in the process here I'll drop this hint, the drummer is the leader.

    5. Oh, getting warm here.

    7. Yes, that's it.

Looking forward tpo your impressions of the rest of the disc.

  5. Hi HP, and thanks for playing. Don't feel bad an about missing who is who, I'd say most of these artists are lesser knowns so I think the idea would be less to identify the players than too comment on what they are doing, which you did. On to your guesses.

    3. Not Kurt Rosenwinkel although I do think there is some shared sensiblilities.

    5. The trumpet player is one of the more recognized, and to some, recognizble, players on this BFT. Let me be clear, I don't think I could personally pick them out blind, I have a tough time with trumpets.

    7. This looks to be a polarizing track with two negative reactions and one very ppositive reaction.

    8. One thing I'll say about this disc is that I had a hard time picking one track, I like most all of what's here and I think the date hangs together pretty well. I am on the lookout for more by this band.

    11. I like the caps, this is how I feel for pretty much all the BFT's I hear,

If there aren't any other respondents I will likely reveal next week.

  6. Thanks for the comments John.

    1. I'm sure you will know the tenorist's name, probably the piano too, although I'd say he is less well known than the reed man.

    3. Yeah, I can see where this may come off as analytical or cold, something there just does it for me. I really like the tenor man and I keep an eye out for his name on dates.

    5. The tenor man is not the leader, in fact there is not single leader designated on this release.

    6. Not Pepper Adams, pretty good guess though. I have two copies of this so...

    7. Different strokes, Allan found this to be the most agreeable cut on the disc.

    8. I am looking for more by this group, if you like this you will probably like the whole date.

Thanks for participating. I'll be back down your way in August, hopefully we'll get a chance to hang.

  7. As always, I find your comments both interesting and insightful Allan. Most of the recordings, with one exception, are fairly recent. As to your preferences, I get that. On the other hand, most all the artists here are on the high side of 30-35 and if they are not the distinctive stylists that Gatortail Jackson or George Braith are/were they are still sincerely plying a craft they love. I guess that's an issue for most musicians who reach a certain level of competency if not originality.

    On to your comments,

    2. The drummer, who you liked but evidently Jim Sangrey wouldn't, is the leader of this session. No Marsalis in sight here or anywhere on my BFT.

    4. Well, everyone has to start somewhere. I picked this up with little idea what to expect. And since I tend to prefer reeds to brass I am a little surprised how much this has grown on me.

    5. I had several Latin pieces on my last BFT. I think your observations here are pretty apropos, although I don't think one can say this music is dead. Whether someone is more authentic than someone else is kind of a tricky judgement but I hear what you are saying.

    7. I congratulate your restraint in not searching for who this is. If you want I can PM you the info on who this is. I considered editing the track but decided not to.

    8. Just one trumpet player.

    9. I like this disc more as a whole and had trouble deciding which cut to include,

    10. And we have a winner, yes, this is our gracious host's newest release.

    11. As far as I know, this track has no Braith connection. Funny you mention George Freeman as i had two different tracks featuring him I almost put on here, maybe next time.

    Thanks for playin.

  8. Any advice on how to get .flac files to play?

You can download foobar, the player I use. Or you could download Traders Little Helper and decode to wav. I guess I should have just encoded the wav files with winrar but I reflexively encoded to flac first.

  9. I bought mine from Cadence/North Country also, along the rest of my 1st stereo, right around 1986 or 7. Still using the same turntable but everything else has been changed out. The guy who designed the Synthesis speakers, David Fokos, went on to found his own speaker company that was direct marketed. That only lasted a few years. Now he is a, as far as I can tell, successful photographer.

  10. If you are patient and have a little time to put into it (and depending somewhat on your location) I think you will get a lot more speaker if you follow Craigslist, US Audio Mart, or even ebay and watch for used speakers. Personally, I think speakers are so subjective that you probably will want to hear them before you purchase. I have a set of speakers purchased locally through eBay (ADS 1290/2 for $300) and another set purchased through Craigslist (Altec Model 14's for $400) that I have been very happy with. Of course, neither of those speakers are small, I think ity is easier to get a better deal on larger speakers due the lower WAF.

  11. I like Tony Malaby's playing; pretty much as a sideman, his own dates haven't really done it for me. If I see his name on a date I am likely to give it more consideration. I am surprised at the amount of comment directed to his appearance here. This is not popular music and I am pretty sure the overwhelming percent of people who choose to go see Tony Malaby do not give a hoot about his wardrobe.
