  1. From the Bo'weavil box set of Joe McPhee's first four CJR albums;
  2. I think I have Celeste somewhere, I'll check this evening. I've just noticed two Pilz LPs that seem to be in print on the bloc thyristors label; Binome (Jean-Noël Cognard & Michel Pilz) Ressuage (Jean-Noël Cognard & Benjamin Duboc & Patrick Muller & Itaru Oki & Michel Pilz) Anyone heard these, and would recommend them, or not?
  3. WW1 hastened the decline of the British Empire, so I'm not surprised to see the choices of music from Britain. However WW1 also triggered the destruction of four empires - Germany, Russia, Austro-Hungarian and Turkey - which haven't been mentioned so much in the thread so far. What music would you select from these countries?
  4. ooooohh! Nice FMP vinyl! Golia is perennially under-recognized but he is still a great player. The recorded start of that wonderful Lacy-Waldron connection: New Jazz/OJC LP. I'm only just discovering Golia. A couple of older dates on vinyl (one with John Carter) led me to try a 2011 CD and all good. Problem is Nine Winds distrib isn't great here so further investigation hampered by postage/customs costs. Carpathes is as good as I'd hoped. Not cheap but worth it I'd heard some of Michel Pilz's work before, but it was this post that made me realise I hadn't heard Carpathes. At the time, I picked up the download on destination out, and realised this was truly excellent, and then found a mint vinyl copy earlier this week, after a long search - again, not cheap! What great music this is. What other Michel Pilz (or indeed FMP) records would be recommended?
  5. Just got an email from the Bo' Weavil label which is doing a vinyl-only reissue of Joe McPhee's first four 4 LPs that were originally released on CJR - Underground Railroad, Nation Time, Trinity and Pieces of Light. There'll also be a boxset for collectors - here's a link: http://www.boweavilrecordings.com/weavil_51_jm.html
  6. Tony Bevan - Trevor Watts - John Edwards - Mark Sanders at the Vortex in London tonight; They were seriously good - fierce, intense, beautiful music. I hope it was recorded.
  7. I picked up a copy of Xenakis´ Persepolis earlier today, for about US$20. Not in mint condition, but it´s spinning now. Everyone else has left the room, but I love it!
  8. Do you mean the Erato baroque recordings, or more generally? I'm just thinking of the Bartok, Debussy and Messiaen recordings I have on Erato, and they're excellent, in terms of both recording and interpretation. The Supraphon catalogue is great, even if the vinyl is often noisy. Ancerl's Mahler with the Czech Philharmonic is superb - the 9th probably being the version I listen to most. The Bartok edition is also a goldmine!
  9. There is a searchable catalogue on the Warner site; http://www.warnerclassics.com/search.htm?label=erato Hopefully one or two things will be of interest - I like this, for example; http://www.warnerclassics.com/release,LaloChaussonRavelSymphonieEspagnolePoemeTzigane_2238.htm
  10. I'll have to look out for that. I have the CD reissue of Intents and Purposes, which is desert island music for me, and I'd love to find this on vinyl. I picked up a copy of Kenny Wheeler's around 6 this morning, which seems excellent on first spin - Evan Parker on reeds, and Eje Thelin on trombone really stand out. Interesting to think about possible links between this music, and Miles Davis' ESP, or Sorcerer.
  11. May be worth checking out the Erato catalogue - there´s some very good performances in there, including Messiaen´s piano music with Yvonne Loriod, and Chausson´s wonderful sonatas. The Domaine Musical is also a particular area of interest for me, with some seminal performances from the 1950s and early 60s, of works such as Boulez´s Le marteau sans maître.
  12. This excellent Egberto Gismonti LP is currently spinning; Definitely amongst my favourites of his work.
  13. Found a copy of this earlier today, and am currently enjoying it; The label seems to have a misprint - it says Richard David, not Davis, and the catalogue number is different from the above picture - it's CST-9003
  14. I picked up a copy of The Revolutionary Ensemble's The People's Republic for about $6 a week or so ago - it's a Brazilian pressing, but sounds excellent - and the music is fantastic;
