Nice cover. Bet the music is good too
It is excellent. I picked it up on a whim from Squidco as part of their "at cost" sale. Each musician composed a side of the LP. I'm a bigger fan of Wooley than Vandermark but this is a really good duo set.

mine was shipped from Amazon.jp today
I hope they do something similar with the Wave project (Peacock, Satoh & Togashi) from the 1980s, those three albums are long out of print and are excellent!https://www.discogs.com/Masahiko-Togashi-Gary-Peacock-Masahiko-Satoh-Wave/release/2895605
I hope your shipping is as quick as mine was. Mine shipped out Monday and arrived Wednesday via DHL. Insanely fast.

This set is magic. With as much as I love Tethered Moon (Kikuchi/Peacock/Motian) the Great 3 with Togashi in place of Motain is a different animal that works in a very transcendent way IMO. The interplay is more interesting.

I think Second Floor Music is Don Sickler’s publishing company. I admittedly don’t understand publishing all that well but maybe he bought the publishing rights to Cliffords catalog or controls them for a fee for the Brown family. It would make sense a publishing company could collect better than a family.

Arrived today!

Pretty terrible sound quality. I would steer clear.

Within the EU it is effortless. Now UK is out of EU sending in or out is going to be prohibitive. We were told we’d have “frictionless trade” with the EU. What a joke. The effect on record collecting is nothing though compared to the way that people’s living and working arrangements have been dismantled.
My package from an EU country has been sitting in a UK depot for four days - I guess while they mail me for the ransom.
That sucks. Brexit was going to be a difficult transition without a pandemic.

Back of an ideological fag packet.
Musicians have been shafted by some swivel-eyed notion of value for money.
Since posting last week, I've found even more Discogs sellers not selling to here. My slow move to streaming and downloads is about to be accelerated.
I think the cost in shipping plus sheer effort required to fill out the customs form now make it prohibitive for some to ship. My self included. I would have to charge too much for my time and effort to ship abroad it’s not worth it to myself or the buyer. Especially if you’re selling as a hobby.
I mean I shipped one record from the US to Canada last summer and it cost over $25. And the was the cheapest option.

That’s an incredibly long list. I have seen a few new restaurants open in my area and every time I see it, it shocks me that someone makes that move right now.

the Milestone All Stars, whom I saw at Yale, probably in the '70s? Who thought a group with Sonny Rollins, McCoy Tyner, Ron Carter and Al Foster could suck? But they really did.
I think the Milestone All Stars were one of the groups mentioned that sparked my curiosity in this.

Ahhh, I'm there with you. One of the few features of Alan Shorter and it left me wanting something more.

this is the one I immediately thought of. I bought it blindly, excited by the personnel. Some of my favorite artists all together playing Trane repertoire. But when I gave it a spin I could not be more disappointed. This really is a very average bop date, nothing more than that. None of the musicians sound truly inspired.I haven't heard this one, I should check it out.... or I guess not. haha

Sharp Nine Class of 2001 - On The Loose
Julius Tarantino - Alto Saxophone
Marcus Strickland - Tenor and Soprano Saxophone
Jeremy Pelt - Trumpet
Jeb Patton - Piano
Brandon Owens - Bass
EJ Strickland - Drums
------
Okay, I pulled this out again based on this thread. This is not a bad album. This is a good straight ahead jazz album. If I had friends over and this was in the background, they would approve. I honestly feel the problem with this album is the lack of more original compositions. 4 originals and 4 standards. The originals clearly stand out. Jeremy and EJ are the standouts to my ears. Marcus the strongest composition on the album. And this is probably a bit of an outlier since this was probably the first recording any of them released. The concept is really cool, but no one really seems to have established their voice yet so its just a bunch of cats playing good music. Reminds me of the New Composers Octet.....hmmmm...i should go back to the shelf for another listen of them soon.

I know this has been discussed in the "What are you listening to?" thread at various times but I find it interesting when it comes up. It tends to be groups whom don't have a designated leader. I wish I could remember those mentioned before but I'm sure others will chime in. I have two that always come to mind when I think of these types of albums, the first being:
Noah Preminger Group - Zigsaw
Noah Preminger - Tenor Saxophone
John O'Gallagher - Alto Saxophone
Jason Palmer - Trumpet
Kris Davis - Piano
Kim Cass - Bass
Rudy Royston - Drums
Rob Schwimmer - Haken Continuum/Clavinet
------
Kim and Jason regularly play with Noah but I was expecting the addition of John, Kris and Rudy to take this music to another plane. I can't say I dislike it, but I feel with this specific group, it was going to be something that was much more moving and I would listen to more. I've only listened 3 times over the year its been out and every time I am left wanting more. I know this goes against the norm of a group without a leader but it is the one I think of most in this context.
------
The next release doesn't have as many big names but when I got it I was expecting more:
Continuum - Act One
Gary Bartz - Alto Saxophone
Jean Toussaint - Soprano and Tenor Saxophone
Bill Mobley - Trumpet and Flugelhorn
Donald Brown - Piano
Essiet Essiet - Bass
Billy Kilson - Drums
Anga Diaz - Percussion
-------
Honestly I don't remember how I heard about this release, I think I was looking into Donald Brown. Either way I pounced on it. After repeated listens nothing sticks. Every time I listening to it again, I'm always surprised how unmemorable it is. I can't remember a time where I wanted to re-listen to a solo or composition.
What other albums do you hear that you think, with this lineup, i was expecting more?

So I got an email from cdjapan that the Great Trio set is back ordered. My guess is they are waiting for the shipment from the pressing plant. At least that is my hope.

My wife has lost family members on her mother’s side. Probably know around a dozen that were hospitalized and experiencing long term effects but survived and probably around 4-5 times that that have tested positive.

I was actually relieved and pleasantly surprised that it wasn't a "jazz movie" . I didn't want to see that in a Disney animated/Pixar production, and I'm very happy that I didn't.
I was also very relieved that it didn't end up being a "white savior" movie although it came pretty damn close up until the very end.
I never expected it to be a jazz movie. I mean, it is a movie for kids. I feel like if it was a jazz movie kids wouldn’t like it.

I'm not understanding the reference to the [dead and buried] Tower and Sam Goody's. I'm sure it's just me.
I think if only the Amazon's data as their source, that alone would be more than an accurate slice of the sales numbers.
Soundscan numbers have to come from a retailer, which the numbers are decreasing. My point is the cd you used to buy at Best Buy or Tower can’t be purchased there anymore and if you that purchase from the artist it’s not going to be counted for your article. Yes Amazon would give you an idea but what about the albums not available on Amazon? My only point is that the info in the article may not be that accurate.

Thanks, that helps. I also reused the LP mailers when I was actively buying and selling records 10-15 years ago.
Reverting to the Discogs, I was just sniffing around their forum. Apparently there's an ongoing cliusterfuck situation brought on by their powers that be, in regards to payment modes and especially newly-released directives from above in regards to the shipping policies.
Yeah. I’m not quite sure what’s going on. I only ship in the US but something they did made it show I only ship outside. I also know they are pushing their payment system cutting out PayPal. I don’t sell enough to care, usually I just try to sell here. For example I’ve had an extra copy of Jemeel Moondoc’s - Revolt album for over two years I meant to list and just found reorganizing since moving a year ago. I need to be better about selling.

$3 cd and $5 LP. I usually reuse packaging from items I receive. Mostly the boxes for cds from dusty groove orders. I don’t sell a lot so I usually just keep 3 mailers and flip them inside out using the brown side as the outside. When I sold a lot on eBay 10+ years ago I used bubble mailers because the were cheap and easy to find. But I was actively flipping at that time and only cds, most NOS hip hop going overseas.

Now I'm curious if that "Uptown Ruler" track is the Marsalis composition from one of those "Soul Gestures" volumes.
I haven’t listened to they Wynton album in a long time but I’m pretty sure I remember them being two different compositions.

The Blue Whale, Beloved Hub of the Jazz Scene in Los Angeles, Announces Permanent Closure
This is devastating to me. I was wondering if it was going to be able to hang on and would check every month to make sure it wasn't announcing its closing, but alas, 2020 screwed us one more time. If you've never been here you missed out. It was a crappy location but it had parking underneath and the first few years it was there it was $5 parking! Unheard of late night in Los Angeles. Of course it eventually increased to I think $15 the last time I was there last year. Steve Coleman held court for two Decembers in a row on residency. I saw Vinny Golia there probably a dozen times. They used to get some of the best show for the Angel City Jazz Fest. The drink selection was good and the food, mostly appetizers were also worth having. So many nights I would get there early to make sure I had a seat along the wall, almost always to the left of the stage audience perspective by the piano, so I could lean back and absorb the music. So many wonderful memories.

Peter Brotzmann - I Surrender Dear (Solo Tenor Saxophone)
A departure from the typical Brotzmann solo as he plays (his) version of standards here. Quite enjoyable.
