The most interesting statistic for me is the following: in the first six months of 2020 physical sales plunged 23% to $376 million. That's CDs, LPs, probably tapes too. Alas no 78s. granted, the pandemic took a large toll. Vinyl records accounted for $232.1 million of music sales in the first half of the year, compared to CDs, which brought in only $129.9 million. Doesn't sound too bad, until the following sales figure comes up - streaming, which includes the revenue of paid streaming, ad-supported streaming and streaming radio, grew 12% to $4.8 billion during the first six months of 2020, RIAA found.

$360 million in physical sales vs. almost $5 billion in streaming. Of that jazz amounts to less than a pittance.

Scroll to next to last page, for stats on jazz sales media types to finally appear. You won't find jazz anywhere else in the Billboard report, in terms of the real $ figures. The figures are so small that they don't bother printing them. I reckon the same applies to classical music.
Jazz album sales have been very poor for years. It's the death spiral now. Bonafide old people and those soon to be old farts, like most of us here, are doing all the heavy lifting, according to the highly-scientific statistical analysis I painstakingly undertook in the How old are YOU thread. The writing is on the wall. Bird Lives, but we are dying. I blame everything and everyone.

This is only soundscan numbers though which would omit Bandcamp and I’m assuming direct purchase from label/artist unless they are reporting them to soundscan, which would seem pointless. I think believing the death of a medium based on numbers from outlets that no longer exist (tower records, Sam goody, etc) is a bit misleading.

I used to go back to this one on occasion, but god, it's been maybe 5-10 years since the last time.

I do enjoy that one as well as the other New Orleans inspired Spirit of Congo Square and The New Sound of Mardi Gras. I think of all I listen to Kenny Kirkland’s self titled album the most frequently. That album is fantastic!

Holy crap. How did I not find this site? Thanks!

edit: I have Ruslan Khain’s album on this label and it’s not listed on the site. It’s SRCD-0037. Nice $3 find bought strictly off the strength of the label.

If it counts, I'd throw in this one

Abraham Burton / Eric McPherson - Cause and Effect... they did come up through bands like Art Taylor's at approximately the right time but they are evidently not wearing suits... and Greg Osby's Banned in New York (not really a young lion, but clearly a postbop album), I also like some people from BIllF's list like Joe Magnarelli or Peter Bernstein... A postbop scene I really liked was the one around Luke Kaven's (original) Smalls Label released a bit later but still documenting a bop scene from the 90s iirc, some older artists like Gil Coggins or Frank Hewitt, some younger ones like Sacha Perry or William Ash... Ash's The Phoenix was a nice album for instance... (but Ash is otherwise a worse example than e.g. Perry because he's really too young)  there are some old threads on this board re that scene

That is a label that put out some great stuff but is impossible to find out what they released. I usually stumble upon it in used bins. I tried a couple times to find discography for the label to no avail. Possible due to the label name.

Is there a story as to why they didn't call this Jazz club the Village Vanguard:

    It's awfully close:

I was curious about that as well but just assumed it was a copyright thing, though The Half Note used to be an actual club.

When I saw Dorthea I instantly thought Camilla Thurman

Amounts to about ~1:10 hours of new music.

Thank you for the cdjapan link. I placed my order along with the Kaoru Abe - Tohoku Sessions 1972 which I’ve debating over for a while now. Figured if I spending for the shipping I might as well get both and save.

  6. The vocals albums William Parker has released. I largely ignored them because of the vocals, but I have to admit i was missing out. This music is marvelous. Raining on the Moon is particularly a great group but even the For Those Who Are, Still albums are excellent. Will pick up Voices Fall From The Sky soon I hope.

  7. These were my top 5+1 from this year:

    Noah Preminger - Contemptment

Vinny Goila - An Electric Love Supreme

    Julian Arguelles - Atlantico

    Immanuel Watkins - Omega

Chad Taylor - The Daily Biological

    Michael Thomas - Event Horizon

honorary mention: Bob Reynolds - Runway

And low and behold, the entire album (Miles Mode) happens to have been uploaded to YouTube...

If memory serves me correctly, I found my copy in 2016 or maybe 2017. I know I didn't know of its existence on youtube, though I would have still bought it. I thought it had recently been re-released but didn't see mention of it on discos.

This is the only track I've heard from AAOBB album. Its fantastic though.

  9. How do you switch it to english? I know of Tennessee Waltz and Begin the Beguine, the latter of which I own, but what other titles were released. Some of these King releases were poorly documented online. I know I found a copy of Miles Modes a couple years before it was released and was super happy as I had only read one discography mentioning its existence. I think it was the poo sun blogspot or something along those lines.

    found the site

    http://www.cyborg.ne.jp/~poo-sun/disco/1990.html

And speaking of Poo, the album I really am pining for is ALL NIGHT, ALL RIGHT, OFF WHITE BOOGIE BAND

I turned 39 in October.  When we both frequented the AAJ board, we were two of the young guys.

Oh wow, I had forgotten the AAJ board. I really loved that place and was devastated when it ceased. The whole site really took a turn. I spent countless hours at work on it back then. Haha

When digital took over the world, tape manufacturers did stop making tape and I remember having to scramble to clean out someone's stock to finish a recording. People are making tape again and there are, of course, some specialty shops that purport to do it better then ever. On a recent project, we had to buy 24 reels of tape because we were mixing down from analog 4 track recordings and we wanted to keep the whole process analog. I believe it was special ordered but there are options now. Everyone who did analog had to reboot and are still catching up. Pressing plants are overwhelmed and are behind on orders trying to catch up and will soon be overwhelmed again with everyone putting in orders for the next record store day madness...

Ah okay. That makes sense. It’s been about a decade since I was in the know back in Nashville and probably 3 years since I’ve been to NAMM.

Very few new recordings a analog all the way. I know one label specializes in this now but I think it's a subscription series or something. Hey, if it works for enough people, more power to them but unless it's something very special, I'm not biting....

Well I think that is partially related to no one making tape anymore correct? So the only way to record is if you find NOS not to mention the inherent issues with the tape machines themselves. Honestly I always thought given the possibilities presented with a DAW, recording to tape was akin to spinning your own yarn. Yeah, you can do it but its really not worth it.

I’d be tempted by a price point of about $80 or so ($10/disc) — or maybe even $88 ($11/disc)

But a full Mosaic-like price of $16/disc (i.e. $128 total)... would be a big “no” for me, I’m afraid.

I’ve had the 3 CD set for 20-ish years, and I’m not sure I really need all that much more, though I do love Lee’s playing in his later years.

A set with minimalistic packaging wouldn’t bother me, and a corresponding lower price would seem appropriate.

I fear if the "Jazz Detective" is involved thats not an option.

    I'll listen....

Independents wouldn't have to adhere to any mandate really unless their distributors needed to have things a certain way. Ropeadope (rightfully) thinks outside the box anyways. I did an album for them a few years back.

Your Christian Scott examples actually proves my point. They made their edits to make their album the way they wanted it and presumably made it a more streamlined (and to them a better) listening experience. That's the way we all make records whether you know about it or not. In the instant gratification era, it's always good to have more content to keep interest in the artist, hence the download only complete set. It probably had a different matrix or ID number as well. That would be a good idea for this project as well and I can ask though I usually don't have much say in these matters. I will tell you that one speed bump for this is that the artist did not want some of those tracks released either.

Not really proving your point at all. The Christian Scott didn’t have any edits. It was just selection for that would fit on one cd/2 LP. It’s also unedited on Apple Music. So it wasn’t a matter of “streamlining”. It was making a product for the format it was in.

i also don’t take issue with different formats having different tracks though I can see why you would. I bought the LP of the Dexter Gordon and decided I didn’t need the full set since I could go to Apple Music if I wanted to hear it.

anyway, do you know if the studio tracks never saw release due to the reverb? Full disclosure it may be addressed in the book but I only went through the first section.
