I picked up the CD edition of Musical Prophet today, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it. There has been some speculation earlier in this thread about the relationship of the new takes here to those issued on the 2014 Japanese Muses CD. I got curious and compared the tracks today; here's the deal:

"Alone Together" on Muses is the same as the alternate take on Musical Prophet.

"Love Me" on Muses is the same as alternate take 2 on Musical Prophet.

"Iron Man" on Muses is unique - no alternate take of this tune appears Musical Prophet.

"Muses" and "Mandrake" on Muses are different takes from those on Musical Prophet - even though there are two takes of "Muses" on the new album, the Muses take is a third, different version.

Muses is obviously sourced from a tape several generations removed from Dolphy's tapes that were used for Musical Prophet, but the additional unique material makes it well worth keeping, in my opinion.

And by the way, the take of Bob James' "A Personal Statement" (aka "Jim Crow") on the Musical Prophet album is a different take from the one released on Other Aspects 30 years ago.

    Hope this info is helpful.

This is info I've been hoping to find. I don't have Muses and have passively been looking for it. I'll keep looking but glad to have this set.

  2. When i put it in my Mac it says:

You inserted a black CD. Choose an action from the pop-up menu or click ignore.

Windows media plays showed tracks and playing times but would try to rip but every time there was an error.  I really believe the cd was finalized at one time. this CD is from 2000.

Do you have Exact Audio Copy on your PC? I have been able to "see" music using EAC but it is not the most forgiving for ripping damaged CDs. For those, I use CD-EX.

FYI - you can't use a copy tool to copy audio off of an audio CD. You'll only get .cda files, which a re useless for playback.

With the disc in your PC drive, try opening File Explorer (right mouse-click the start button and select File Explorer), find the drive with the disc (D: likely) and right-mouse click it. Look at the Properties. See what it says. Next, see if you can click "Copy disc". As mentioned above, sometimes a copy will play where the original wouldn't.

I'll try this tomorrow. You are correct about .cda files. That was all I could see. Thanks!

Since you have a few Macs, try the free X Lossless Decoder (XLD). I've used it for years without any problems. If your cd-r is defective, XLD will tell you where the problem is.

    XLD didn't work.

  4. Thanks Shrdlu I'll try Winamp.

Not worried about being out a little money for this cd. Something that is rare and it wasn't much money. I would like to hear the tunes though. I believe it was finalized in the past, I have seen the "not finalized" error before.

  5. I did some searching but couldn't find anything. So here is the dilemma. I bought an album that doesn't play in any cd player I own (3 separate units including my car), my external disc drive on my Mac, my MacBook Pro (when I had a similar issue with a Miles Mosley in the past the MacBook Pro worked) or a PC or my playstation. My Mac and MacBook both see the disc as blank and the cd players either blank or error. Lastly the PC read the data but I received an error every time I tried to rip it. Anyone have any ideas on how to get this music off the disc?

Don`t know about/how concise payment of royalities was with SteepleChase, but Nils Winthers offered Dexter Gordon the possibility of recording dates/releases during a time span when the majors .... were not so interested ....

I was referring to owning the right for perpetuity including the compositions if I remember correctly. I don’t have the book on hand. Have you read the book to know the scenario we are referring?

On a separate note, who knew that the owner of Steeplechase was such a dick when Dexter was ready to sign with Columbia? Not very gracious or appreciative of Dexter's work for that label at a time that it was just getting off the ground.

Yes I agree. I was disappointed to hear that. I do wish they actually said how much they had to pay Steeplechase. He may have just seen it as a chance to “stick it to the big label” and wasn’t anything against Dexter. Those Steeplechase contracts sounded like a horrible one for the artist though.

I'd say there's much more insight as it goes on ...

I finished it this morning. More insightful as you go... a little I suppose. There is a lot of “I believe” or “in my opinion” which I personally don’t consider insight. And per this book Dexter loved every drummer he played with. Haha. It was a good read, the last couple chapters the best which makes sense since Maxine was present. Worth picking up, but will pass on instead of keeping for a reread.

  9. I'm a little more than 100 pages in. The timeline jumps around and there is an ample amount of repeating in all chapters thus far. Still a worthy read. Maxine interjects personal proclamations that I could live without but it is a fascinating read regardless. Crazy how much of the scene Dexter lived in overlapped with the scene Horace Tapscott fostered in. Connected by a band director in high school.

Please look out for “Overground to The Vortex” as well as “Unknowable” both on Not Two Records. They both have Michel Lambert on drums but the former has John Edwards on bass and Steve Beresford on piano for the second half of the recording. The latter has Rafal Mazur on acoustic bass guitar to fill out the trio.

As always the sound quality is premium and the performances especially on the date with Edwards & Beresford is exceptional.

I have Happening and it’s good but not on the level of the above recordings I’m recommending.

Thanks for the heads up! I actually only got The Happening because there was a copy on amazon for $1.72.

I did end up ordering Intuition and The Joy of Being as well.

I owned one album from Francois Carrier and love it (Compassion - Naxos 2000) which I listened to again last night and decided to explore more of his output.

    I purchased

    Happening - Leo Records 2006

    All'alba - Justin Time Records 2003

    Katmandu - FMR 2007

    All Out - FMR 2011

The Russia Concerts Vol 1. - FMR 2014
