    The Busker

Jacob Duncan’s The Busker is a treasure. The protagonists of Duncan’s autobiographical compositions are fellow companions, drifters, and triumphant nomads exclaiming their insignificance. The album balances acute sonic observations of a traveler’s microcosm with grand hints at the struggle to understand the macrocosm. The compositions are melodically-driven, sincere, musical conversations between storytellers. The improvisations are undisguised and earthy, exploring comings and goings, estrangements, and connections.
Duncan’s arrangements are sometimes sad, sometimes playful, and always original. They are well-served by his masterful companions, John Goldsby on double bass and Craig Wagner on acoustic guitar. It is paradoxical that The Busker, a musical memoir of an
erican music. Duncan’s compositions are constructed of the greatest melodic aspects of the American songbook and, the intimate, yet universal colloquialisms of the American folk traditions. Despite being instrumentals, each piece evokes the voice of a troubadour lulling the listener into a lucid dream, in which they become the teller of their own tall tales.

Did you happen to order the cd? If so did you receive it? I haven't gotten my cd nor a response to my inquiry. I'm not impatient but it has been a month. Something should have happened by now I would think.

Thanks for the note. I worked for years on getting this happening, and it's finally out.

Of course I am biased but it's a lovingly assembled package, straight from the master tapes and with much joy and friendship coursing through.

Phill Musra is a good friend and I'm looking forward to seeing what the future holds.

My copy arrived today. Packaging is exceptional! Sound quality is as well. So happy to have a sanctioned release of this

  4. Album                                                          Catalog No.

    Black Note - 43rd & Degnan                        WSR 1011

Charles McPherson - Illusions In Blue *      WSR 1012

Robert Stewart - Judgement                       WSR 1013

                                                                         WSR 1014

The Philippe Vieux Qt. - Point of Vieux       WSR 1015

Faye Carol - The Flow                                 WSR 1016

    * Based on the Robert Stewart insert, it lists Illusions In Blue as catalog No. 1012. The Chazz Jazz (McPherson's label) release has a 1990 copyright date, which would pre-date it to the World Stage Records labels first release in 1991. There are a couple interesting articles about this album archived with LA Times, where it seems Charles had a dispute with the venue that some songs were recorded at. All the article list dates that indicate the Chazz Jazz release was after 1990 since it doesn't seem it had quite been released in 1991, but was available in 1993: April 2nd, 1991 articleApril 23rd,1991 articleJune 2nd, 1993 article. I honestly have no idea what to make of all this but its interesting.

Charles McPherson - Illusions In Blue

    The original issue, possibly?

Thats interesting, I own Illusions In Blues on Chazz/Jazz label and its copyright date is 1990 and states its a live recording but doesn't list the location.

Possible it was reissued by World Stage 3 years later I supposed. Chazz/Jazz appears to have been located in La Jolla, CA, so the SoCal proximity leads to this being a possibility as well.

    Thanks!!!!!

The Lord Disco has only these two, with a note that the latter was reissued on Red Records. IIRC Higgins had a good relationship with the Italian label.

I believe the stream of the album Robert has on Youtube for judgement states it was reissued by Red.

  6. Does anyone know what albums were released on Billy Higgins label World Stage records. The only 3 I have been able to find are:

Black Note - 43rd and Degnan

    Robert Stewart - Judgement

    and

Philippe Vieux QT - Point of Vieux

I'm wondering if anyone has any info on other releases. I haven't had any success researching on the internets

  7. My two favorite solo albums are:

    Steve Coleman - Invisible Paths

    and

    Vinny Golia - Solo

Vinny's album "Clarinet" is also wildly entertaining, which I didn't expect for a clarinet hahaha.

Nate Wooley has quite a collection of solo trumpet recordings my favorite being "Wrong Shape To Be A Storyteller". Syllables 8 and 9 are quite good too.

William Parker "Lifting Sanctions" is excellent. Parker has a lot as well," Crumbling in the Shadows..." is a 3 disc box set that in the past was pretty cheap, $20 to $25, and I recommend that too

They are not suspect recordings (though they are CDRs, so downloading might be preferred), they are authorized releases openly sold at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival; in fact, there usually is a sign at the performance announcing when they are recording. They do not record all the performances; I would expect it depends on whether the artist wants the recording made or not.

I posted this one because it's a performance by Christian Scott that I attended there this year, and I've listened to this recording quite a bit--it is rather good.

Sweet! Thank you for the clarification. I've seen these in the past, though I was unaware of this particular recording. I'll get the MP3 when I get home. The previous recordings That help me stumble upon these were the Stooges Brass Band ones.
