If you do a search quite a few of these have been discussed here and in a Roscoe Mitchell thread in the Recommendations forum. Staying in the 80's I highly recommend 3x4 Eye, Duets and Solos (with Muhal Richard Abrams)Snurdy McGurdy(on Nessa), More Cutouts (on Cecma) and (stretching things to the early 90's) This Dance is For Steve McCall.

Fennesz' solo work (which I believe you are referencing) differs quite a bit from his collaborative work. I saw a live show of Rowe solo / Fennesz solo / Rowe and Fennesz duo not too long after Live at the LU was released. I prefered the live show and still don't love Live at the LU, although I enjoy listening to it on occasion. For melodic collaboration check out Polwechsel / Fennesz - Wrapped Islands. My recommendations for best places to start for Fennesz collaborations are Four Gentleman of the Guitar, with Keith Rowe, Toshimaru Nakamura and Oren Ambarchi, ErstLive 004 with Sachiko M, Otomo Yoshihide and Peter Rehberg and the orange disc on Charizma, with Werner Dafeldecker,Christof Kurzmann, Jim O'Rourke and Kevin Drumm. By the way, thanks to blake I have a copy of Derek Bailey's Aida sitting here, which I was able to buy for $8.99. Very nice.

Yes. My understanding is that the drummer plays to a click track, the keyboardist (Ed's wife) has been told when to trigger the samples that Ed programmed and the bass player doesn't do anything too interesting. The lineup has changed at least twice since I saw them last year. I had no impression that I was seeing an actual band play, unlike the show in 1994.

I am shocked to read this. Based on your review and the review Chaney posted I am now also very curious to hear this. My enthusiasm for Matthew Shipp's work has waned quite a bit, so it will be interesting to see how this one sounds. This is such an expensive thread...

I have most of their albums and have seen them live twice. The first show, in 1994, was fantastic. The second show, last year, was abysmal. I don't believe I will go see them again. I highly recommend their "live" album called Spice Doubt. It has a fantastic version of "Sploosh." The live album Pongmaster's Ball is nice, too.

It depends how much they charge for shipping. It would be $8.70 per disc with today's exchange rates. Unless they charge over $6 per disc shipping it would be a decent deal.
-
No, Between the Lines is the label.
-
The only disc of his that I have heard is A Tree Frog Tonality, with Wadada Leo Smith, Larry Ochs and Ed Thigpen. It is excellent. I would love to hear recommendations for other albums of his.
-
I've only heard A Tree Frog Tonality, which is excellent, so I would love to read some discussion of his BS discs.

Some fantastic Black Saint / Soul Note recommendations so far. Here are a few more discs I love that haven't been mentioned so far: Don Pullen - Sixth Sense, Evidence of Things Unseen, Milano Strut, Warriors, Healing Force Joseph Jarman / Don Moye w/Johnny Dyani - Black Paladins Lester Bowie - The 5th power Roscoe Mitchell - 3x4 Eye, This Dance is for Steve McCall

I loved this quote from the mailing list: "I have held 3 monthly jandek listening parties where we listen to all of the albums in a row including the two tribute albums, we have wine and some good snacks and force ourselves to no sleep or bathroom breaks... it can get maniacal but it is well worth it to immerse yourself in such an impressive body of work....." Man, that is hardcore. I hope that is tongue in cheek. Talk about needing to get out of the house more often... (I hope this quote wasn't from one of you.)

I'm curious about your "recordings vs. concerts" comment. Aren't all AMM discs the recordings of live concerts? Did AMM know in advance that a concert would be released or were all shows recorded and select shows were chosen for release after the fact? I asked about the Boston show as it is available in trading circles and would be a nice way for Chaney to test the waters before placing an order for imported discs he might not care for. That's all.
-
David, the Moore / Matthews disc sounds very interesting. I'll give the soundclips a listen. Jon, How would you rate the AMM set in Boston a few years back relative to the discs you recommended to Chaney?
-
AMM: Newfoundland disc 2 of Laminal Live in Allentown Before Driving to the Chapel AMMMusic AMMMusic will be the least expensive for you to try. The discs on Matchless are pretty pricey with the current exchange rate. Inexhaustible Document

Bagatellen has a review posted of the next five releases on Utech records. The Triage and Tetuzi Akiyama discs look the most interesting to me.
-
Alan Silva & Oluyemi Thomas - Transmissions (Eremite) That would be my choice. Awful cover, great music. Oluyemi is fantastic here, too. He is sadly under-recorded.
-
The phrase "Retouched cover to come" in white text printed right on the front artwork made it onto released copies of the album.

I wasn't familiar with Eisenstadt until I read the most recent issue of Signal to Noise. What caught my eye is he went to the same college I did, but a few years later. He is fairly young, which makes this album that much more impressive.
-
Seconded! I finally had a chance to hear this album and, after listening to it a few times over the past two days, I definitely recommend it. Rivers sounds fantastic and Rudoplh and Eisenstadt provide some very nice rhythms for him to improvise over.

According to Jan these will most likely not be repressed. The Drake / Tsahar vol. 1 might be an exception, but only if vol. 2 drives up demand. He also said that a few other titles are running low and will either have to be repressed or listed as out of print later on this year. I asked him if we could get a list of the titles affected. EDIT - Here you go: 004 - Brötz 033 - Albert 035 - Electrics 044 - Parker These are the four discs that are running low and may or may not be reissued. I really like the Brotz, Ayler and Parker discs (although most of the Ayler has since turned up on the Holy Ghost box) and have an order in for the Electrics.

Correct: "all single CDs are $10, doubles $17, plus my shipping estimate. buy any 5 releases, get an additional single CD free. the AMPLIFY 2002: balance box set (which is starting to run low) is still $100 plus shipping, but you also get two single discs of your choice included for free. sale ends last day of February and is only good for all-Erstwhile orders directly through me at ErstRecs@aol.com. no preorders will be accepted; this only applies to releases out now. EL005 is $28 plus shipping, and if you buy EL005 plus two other discs, you get one more free." This doesn't help me at all, but at least I'm not tempted to spend any more money. I just saw elsewhere that Thomas Lehn / Marcus Schmickler - Bart is down to 4 remaining copies.

The Howard is oop, but still listed as available at JazzLoft. I wrote up the Feza a few times here. It is a fairly rough jam session, but I really like it. The Gahnold Trio (Flowers for Johnny) is excellent. It should probably be your next choice, out of the ones you listed. I have the new Drake / Tsahar on order. People at JC who have heard it all give it a thumbs up. The Dynamic Duo is good, but not essential. It is important as there was very little recorded Arthur Rhames prior to its release. I don't know the Bayashi. I hope that helps.
-
I just placed an order for this disc. I'm looking forward to hearing it, Jan!
-
I ordered three discs, too. I bought the new Hamid Drake / Assif Tsahar - Live at Glenn Miller cafe, Lars-Göran Ulander Trio - Live at Glen Miller Cafe and The Electrics - "Chain of Accidents." I don't know the Wallin disc you ordered but the Brotz is really good and I really enjoy the Feza, too. I've been going back and relistening to all of the discs on Ayler I own. I also highly recommend the Lyons box, both Exploding Customer discs, the Anders Gahnold - Flowers for Johnny, the Dynamic Duo disc, the first Drake / Tsahar disc and the William Parker - ...and William Danced. There are more Aylers that I enjoy, but those are my favorites.

up for some air... two new albums mentioned on the list: Khartoum Variations CD (Corwood Industries) [COR0782] Newcastle Sunday 2CD (COR 0783) KV is different versions of the same songs that appear on 781. Newcastle is supposed to be a 1.5 hour live performance from May of 2005. I don't think I need to hear 782 anytime soon but the live 2cd set sounds like fun.
