  1. WMFU has archived a show they did on Bailey here. You can listen to selections from many albums and many eras.

have you heard Howard's The Black Ark from the early seventies? barely reissued on CD (Japanese Tokuma), this is not only the best Howard I've heard, but the only Arthur Doyle I've ever liked. a real classic from this area of music. I finally had a chance to hear Black Ark thanks to a kind soul on IHM. I was very impressed on first listen. This is a great album that deserves to be available. Also, if you are a fan of the Art Ensemble of Chicago I highly recommend the album Black Paladins, by Joseph Jarman, Don Moye and Johnny Dyani, on Black Saint. Very, very good. I really like what Dyani adds to the mix, taking some tunes that would have fit righti in on an AEC album of the era and taking them to a different (S. African) place.

I just picked up my first disc from Loose Torque, called Calling Signals. Frode Gjerstad, Louis Moholo, Hasse Poulsen and Nick Stephens. On first listen it is a very interesting set. I'm not familiar with Stephens or Poulsen, who sounds a lot like Derek Bailey here. Review over on OneFinalNote. FYI, discs on Loose Torque are cdrs. This is a very strong release. I'll have to check out some more of their discs one of these days.

For anyone who has not yet heard Julius Hemphill's fantastic album Dogon A.D., Tim Berne is now offering it as a free download on the Screwgun Records site.

This disc, along with two others by Leandre is reviewed in this article over on onefinalnote.
  9. Dear lord this is good.
  10. "What Can You Give a Wookie For Christmas (When He Already Owns a Comb)" epitomizes the holiday spirit to me.
  11. Will do. Thanks for the recommendation!

Yes, it is fantastic. I just finished listening to it again and I might enjoy it more than their first album. The reissue of John Stevens' New Cool on Emanem is also very, very good. Everything Nate said about it in the album of the week thread is spot-on.

I've been trying not to spend money on new music, but an email I just received from Jazz Loft might cause me to break down and place an order. Until the end of the month, three of Ellery Eskelin's discs on Hat Hut are half off. ($9.99) The titles are Arcanum Moderne, Vanishing Point and Forms.
  14. I finally had a chance to pick up this album and, after three listens, want to second everything Nate had to say about it. It is an excellent live date, adventurous without being too "out" (I feel like I am saying this a lot today.) Very highly recommended. If you dig Masada, Exploding Customer or any jazz that pushes things beyond the classic post-bop sound without sacrificing lyricism, melody and groove then there is no reason why you wouldn't really enjoy this album. I need to get some more of Stevens' releases.
  15. The new album is fantastic. The tunes are all shorter than on Glen Miller Cafe but the band sounds fantastic. Again, nothing too "out" here. The band grooves fiercely and reminds me of Masada in the way it is adventurous without sacrificing melody and real tunes. If you enjoyed the first disc you will, as Jan said, love the new one.

I haven't heard the disc FMR released but the second Gjerstad / Marhaug disc, titled Red Edge, is fantastic. Lasse has a new album out by a band called "Nash Kontroll," featuring Mats Gustafsson and Dror Feiler. I'd be very interested to hear this one. Marhaug has been very impressive in almost every album of his I have heard.
  17. Start with Live in Sevilla (9 tracks.)
  18. a very interesting link taken from the jandek mailing list: "Perfect Sound Forever has a new Jandek tribute online: http://www.furious.com/perfect/jandek/ Most significantly, it includes a new interview with Loren Connors about playing with Jandek. While it's not very long, Connors still says much more than any of Jandek's other collaborators have gone on record with. Aaron Goldberg reviews every Jandek album (except Khartoum) on a scale from SHIT to MASTERPIECE." As Seth says, the NYC "review" is crap, but the Connors interview is fun and the ranking of every albums is interesting, and ties in with this thread very well.

I'm curious to read what you think of this album. I saw them live three days before the first of the two shows this disc was recorded at.
  20. I just found out that a coworker's mother-in-law was killed by a drunk driver Wednesday night. No "Happy Thanksgiving" for her family because one person decided to "take their chances." It doesn't matter to the person you hit how far you intended to drive.
  21. In that case, I'll also recommend these: Otomo Yoshihide’s New Jazz Quintet : Flutter Ground Zero : Null and Void Ikue Mori : Labyrinth Painkiller : Painkiller Collected Works Milford Graves/John Zorn : 50th Birthday Celebration Volume Two Masada String Trio : 50th Birthday Celebration Volume One Not all have a limited number of tracks, however.
  22. Not knowing how "out" your tastes are, I would suggest starting with these discs: Masada - Live in Sevilla John Zorn - The Gift Wadada Leo Smith - Golden Quartet Wadada Leo Smith - Kabell Years

You should also check out Martin Küchen's solo album Music From One of the Provinces in the Empire, part of Confront's "Collector's Series." It is very different from his work with Exploding Customer. All tracks are solos on prepared alto and soprano saxophones. It would be difficult to tell that these sounds were created by one human playing a saxophone if you did not have that information before listening. Review here.
  24. I just got a notice in my queue that Art Blakey's Drum Suite isn't going to be around much longer.
  25. Speaking for myself I harbor no ill will towards RT and hope he contributes to the board for years to come. He is a valuable member here and this BFT should in no way cause people to want him to stop posting. (I still want to read the answers soon, however.)
