Check out this version of While My Guitar Gently Weeps from the 2004 R&R Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. He's not visible until almost halfway through the tune, but his solo at the end is amazing. Even better than the SNL clip.
  2. They are a mixed bag on both sites. I have three or four so far from the official site and the quality ranges from excellent to disappointing. One of the sets never gets any listening as the sound quality is a real barrier to my enjoying the show. The 5/7/1999 show in Ireland (vol. 20) is, imo, a dud. 12/28/1987 is fantastic. Great sound quality and a really raw, early mix of songs. 10/8/1990 is a good one, too. The Irving Plaza show at the site you linked to blows all of these away for sound quality, though. I would definitely grab that one if you are a fan and have a fast connection.
  3. up again, as Fugazi has added ten more shows to the list. The newly added second set comprises of the following shows; Gainesville, FL - March 1990, Sydney, Australia - October 1991, Bordeaux, France - May 1992, Washington, DC - August 1993, Kansas City, KA - August 1993, Geneva, Switzerland - October 1999, New Orleans, LA - March 2002, Birmingham, England - October 2002, Leeds, England - October 2002 and London, England - November 2002. The November 2002 show is the last show Fugazi played to date. Time to blow through some of the money sitting in my paypal account.
  4. He allows taping and 93 full live shows are available for download here. (These are all from the Robert Walters 20th Congress band.) Another 3 shows are available here, by "Robert Walter's Super Heavy Organ." He was originally in the Greyboy Allstars, with Karl Denson. I really like their albums that I have heard. They have been discussed here before, so you should be able to pull up some info with a quick search. Speaking of Stanton Moore, he also allows taping and there are 22 shows of his available for download here. Enjoy!
  5. As I recall there is a stop every five feet, especially through BU. I used to take the B line from Brighton into Kenmore Square for work.
  6. Seconded. Song for Biko is essential, imo. All of Dyani's Steeplechase albums are fantastic. Dudu is also on Mbizo and Witchdoctor's Son, if I recall correctly.
  7. getting back on subject, somewhat... I really like Mongezi Feza's album on Ayler, Free Jam. I was not familiar with anyone on this disc before hearing this a few years back (including Feza)and I was very impressed. The first disc starts off a bit slowly, as if the musicians were testing the waters and trying to figure out what they were going to do, but it quickly picks up and some great jamming ensues. There are some flubs and weak spots here and there but, overall, this is a fantastic album. It was recorded in 1972, but could easily pass for something much more current. At points on the second disc Feza sounds quite a bit like Toshinori Kondo, in the way he distorts the sounds coming out of his trumpet. Are any of you familiar with Dudu Pukwana's albums as a leader? AMG raves about one of them but they all seem to be oop.

from Emanem's news page: In preparation on Psi: Evan Parker 'The Topography of the Lungs' (1970) reissue plus with Derek Bailey & Han Bennink I've heard about this album for years and am really looking forward to hearing it. Hopefully it is actually scheduled for release soon and not just a dream of theirs.
  9. Yes, according to the Emanem website. The reissue will be on Psi. http://www.emanemdisc.com/news.html Hopefully "in preparation" means heading off to the presses soon and not just "we hope we are able to reissue it at some point in the vague future."

I like the album Drip, but think that the one David bought is the better of the two. Both are well worth hearing, if not essential.
  11. I will not be partaking, but I thought some of you might be interested to know that Deepdiscountdvd is having a 40% off sale on Criterion DVDs. Free shipping within the U.S., too.
  12. Volume 1 was great, so I'll be picking up this release soon. Ayler has been releasing some excellent discs lately.
  13. I just bought this album a few weeks back and have been loving it. You did a fantastic job describing the group, but I'd also add that the music is joyful, too, and swings like mad. Based on my overwhelmingly positive reaction to this disc I just ordered two of their archival live releases: Bremen to Bridgewater and Traveling Somewhere. It's a shame that so much of their music is oop or very difficult to track down around these parts.

I pulled up the review after looking at your auction. What garbage. I did win one of your auctions and will be sending payment later on today.

I have a new favorite review from Allmusic. It is a "review" of Julius Hemphill's Roi Boye and the Gotham Minstrels, on Sackville. Here is the complete review, penned by Michael Nastos: "Psycho-theater drama in the form of the free African-American creative-jazz movement at its height. " I have no idea what that is supposed to mean.
  16. Two I have not yet heard but am looking forward to hearing very soon: Alexander von Schlippenbach & Aki Tasse - Piano Duets Live in Berlin (FMP) Marilyn Crispell & Georg Graewe - Piano Duets (Leo)
  17. Well said.
  18. I thought so, but every U.S. source I have tried has been unable to get a copy of Aida to sell to me. Hopefully it, along with the other oop discs, is brought back in print soon.

No Broetzmann, but Don Pullen seemed to work really well. (Or at least they did not complain to me.)
  20. True, but Jon has the cost for shipping listed in every auction I looked at. I've bought discs from Jon in the past (and am bidding on one of these now) and he is really quick to ship and is extremely pleasant to deal with.
  21. I love Hamid's playing and actively seek out his recordings. There is no accounting for taste, but Hamid is a fantastic musician whose playing brings me great enjoyment.

Happy New Year to all of you, too! I'm off to choose some "family friendly" music for the guests today. How Funny Rat can I get the music without receiving complaints? I'll start with Charles Tolliver and see how that goes.
  23. Thanks to Nate and to the two PMs I received. I seem to have found a copy of Aida, but I'm not holding my breath that the seller will actually deliver.
  24. I'm looking for two Derek Bailey discs and one Bailey-related disc that seem to be out of print. If anyone knows of a site where I can find reasonably priced copies of these, or has a used copy they would be willing to part with, I would appreciate it. Aida Drop Me Off at 96th Spontaneous Music Ensemble - Karyobin thanks!
