👍 This is the first album of earlier Herman I purchased. (I was into the Fantasy recordings at the time). Love it. Great compilation. Absolutely outstanding in every respect. Perhaps my favorite big band recording (certainly in the top 5). 👍 Kenton - Contemporary Concepts Now:

For sure. I wish Mosaic had done a Rugolo set.

Now: It's a good one. If I had to take one Kenton recording to a desert island, this may be it. (The only drawback is Sam Donahue's screeching on tenor at the end of B&S). 👍 Yes, it's a good recording. but in general terms Kenton Plays Rugolo is better IMHO. The bands Kenton had in the '45 - '48 period when Rugolo was his chief writer/arranger were pretty awesome.

I'm not a big Greenwich fan (respect him more than really enjoy him), but these are worth checking out.

It would have been the summer of '74 . On a Friday night I heard a track from "Enlightenment" on Ted O'Reilly's "Jazz Scene" radio show. One Friday night a month his program was devoted to new releases. It knocked me out so much that I went to downtown Toronto the next day and bought a copy (either at Sam's or A&A). Incredibly, a few weeks later, McCoy's "Atlantis" quartet played at the University of Toronto Convocation Hall and I eagerly attended. The sound was not great but I enjoyed the concert. I also bought a copy of "Atlantis" when it came out, and then most of McCoy's Milestone LP's over the next few years. Since all my LP's, (save 100) have been sold, I don't have any of them anymore, though I do have "Enlightenment" and "Atlantis" on CD. I still enjoy them, but perhaps not as much now as when I first heard them.

I have those plus several others, including the Andy Martin and the Bill Perkins; maybe a couple more. The Konitz is one of my favorites (and among the best in the series IMHO). Now: 👍 w. Al Cohn on several tracks 👍 👍 Great player.
