Disc 2 of 2, recorded Aug. 12, 1994. The Seven Sensational Saxophones (Jesse Davis,Gary Foster, Ken Peplowski, Chris Potter, Bill Ramsay, Frank Wess & Ricky Woodard) also served as the sax section in the subsequent big band (which also included Sweets Edison, Randy Sandke, George Graham, Al Aarons, Chauncey Welsch, Robert Trowers, Rob McConnell,Jimmy Cheatham and the Gene Harris Quartet)

Excellent album! Playing: Recorded Aug. 8, 1982 as part of the 14th Concord Jazz Festival (a festival which now only lives in memory since the Concord Records label is long gone from Concord). I really do like this version of "Koto Song" featuring Bill Smith.

The band Cow Bop is a project led by guitarist Bruce Forman. He combined two of his favorite styles of music to create what he calls Western Bebop. His wife, Pinto Pammy, provides some gorgeous vocals (and some impressive yodeling on the closing track). This release from 2003 is the first of their four available CDs. I really like all their CDs and got to see them perform at Yoshi's several years ago. Recommended for any one who has a taste for Western Swing music.

The Complete Motown Singles, Vol 1 -- a 6 CD set. Not many hits in this collection from the early years, but I'm interested in hearing what Motown had to offer in the beginning. Plus, the liner notes in all the other entries in the series that I have have been most informative.

Johnny Lytle!!! I've long loved this gorgeous Johnny Lytle penned ballad (not something one might expect to find on an album bearing this title). I don't know if there are/were any lyrics to it, but if not, some talented lyricist should get to work on that. This is a tune which deserves to be covered by other instrumentalists and singers.

One thing I have felt is kind of odd/unfair is that in most record stores I've seen Dionne Warwick classified in the "Vocals" section alongside Sinatra, Streisand, Crosby, etc, while her sister Dee Dee is classified in the "Soul/R&B' section. To my mind Dionne Warwick was/is a soul singer -- maybe not a let-it-all-out, funky soul singer (there are/were plenty of those in the world as it is), but certainly a soul singer nonetheless. Now playing: Kind of like "The Gentle Side of Betty Carter". Tracks 1, 5, 9, 12, & 13 were recorded 55 years ago today, Aug. 10, 1962. Gotta respect the longevity of guitar players; of all the personnel listed for that recording session, only Kenny Burrell and John "Bucky" Pizzarelli are still with us.

!!! I love this one and the video version of it as well. Did it ever have an official DVD release here in the USA? I only have the VHS version put out by Rhino/Atlantic which I transferred to a DVD-R. Now playing:
