  1. Music from this date 66 years ago -- Disc 1 and the first 5 tracks of Disc 2, which complete the concert. Lots of the usual suspects are on hand. Billie Holiday sounds in good voice on her one feature ("Lover Man").
  2. A superior recording by Mr. Hamilton with superb assistance from Tommy Flanagan, Bob Cranshaw and Lewis Nash. Scott Hamilton is 64 today. Steve Turre is 70 today. Wow! It seems like only yesterday when they were among the young guys on the jazz scene. But wait a minute -- if they're no longer young guys, then that might mean I'm no . . . lon . . . ger . . . NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!
  3. I didn't check the total run time of the CD, but I suspect there was probably space enough left to accommodate that stray Danny Barker track. Perhaps they forgot about its existence? Now playing:
  4. Disc 1 of 2 from this compilation of OOP Muse material put out by 32 Jazz many years ago now.
  5. The Rudi in question being Mr. Blesh and these fun, lively jam sessions were recorded in his apartment. Great stuff!
  6. These two great veterans are showcased here as recorded "live" in Chicago and L.A. in 1957 with the surprising accompaniment of the MJQ rhythm section. Were the MJQ part of the JATP tour in that autumn of '57? On the final track, OP replaces John Lewis and the front line is augmented by Pres, Getz and J.J.
  7. Previously: a CD which contains these two albums: Currently listening to -- a CD which contains these 2 albums:
  8. One of Ms. McPartland's finest Concord albums! Now playing
  9. Can bad writing ever have too many commas?
  10. This year's Grand Prize winner in the contest which honors well-crafted bad writing went to 17 year old Tanya Menezes from my hometown of San Jose (move over Joey Chestnut, we have a new hero). It is an entry which made me laugh out loud at the laundromat when I read it! In an article I read in the local paper, she said she had been working on and refining that one sentence since her freshman year. Nice to see her hard work paid off. Prize winners and runners-up in various genre categories can be found here: https://www.bulwer-lytton.com/latest-winners
  11. Disc 2 of 3, which represents the years 1934-36. This set from the Indiana Historical Society includes a great 108 page book with lots of vintage photos and informative text about the various shows, songs and performers included in this collection. There are a number of jazz performers included such as Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Art Tatum, Artie Shaw, Bud Freeman & Bob Wilber, Billie Holiday, Benny Goodman and the wonderful Lee Wiley.
  12. I have it, but have not yet read it cover to cover. It's actually a good book for skimming through. It presents a number of jazz recordings and each has a paragraph or more (depending on how detailed a recollection the interviewee has about the record at hand) of thoughts on its preparation/recording by a producer or engineer who was involved with each. Some of the recollections are more informative than others. A variety of jazz records are presented and tales are told by the likes of George Avakian, Milt Gabler, Bob Porter, Creed Taylor, Tom Dowd, Sue Mingus, Helen Keane, Joel Dorn, Kip Hanrahan and others. If the price is good, I'd say buy it.
  13. I've never been disappointed by anything Johnny Lytle did! Now playing The (unofficial) CD reissue adds 2 bonus tracks.
  14. Disc 2 of 2. Did this ever have an official US CD reissue? I have it on a French Columbia/Sony reissue from the 1990's (i'm guessing). Not one of his essential albums, but any Erroll Garner is worth hearing to me. The tracks on which he plays harpsichord take some getting used to.
  15. Ah, the memories! About a year after the above concert took place, I started fifth grade and joined our school's music program, playing drums very poorly. This song was in our repertoire (sans guitar solo) alongside such gems as "Tijuana Taxi", "We've Only Just Begun" and "Snowbird". It was my favorite number that we ever played. I can still recall the instructor teaching me the "one, two, threeeintofour" beat used in the arrangement we played of this song.
  16. From The Complete Remastered Recordings on Black Saint & Soul Note boxed set.
  17. -- I really like those Hep Benny Goodman Plays CDs. Now playing --
