  1. I got that one last week, but haven't listened to it yet. So much music, so little time!
  2. I finally found a reasonably priced copy of this 2 disc set, so I jumped on it --
  3. I suppose the Razor & Tie label is no more, but they did put out some fine compilations back in the day. This was one of them.
  4. A double dose of Jonathan Richman
  5. Indeed! This is a fine recording of the Gillespie big band too, preserved in very good audio quality. I realize this recording from 61 years ago, but did any one here ever happen to see this version of Dizzy's big band performing live? Is there any surviving video footage of this aggregation in action? And now for something completely different: Disc 1 of 2. Yes, it is possible to love both "I Remember Clifford" and "Bizarre Love Triangle".
  6. Previously: Currently:
  7. Wait -- what? Swimsuit competitions added to the jazz poll? Herbie Mann and his Speedo heartily endorse your idea!!!
  8. Earlier: Disc 1 & 2 of 2. Currently:
  9. Another spin of this -- I especially like these two tracks which were recorded back-to-back on Feb. 25, 1956. Not surprisingly, Maynard Ferguson was in the trumpet section. I don't know who did the following arrangement, but it makes me laugh out loud for pure joy each time I hear it.
  10. and Disc 4 of 4 from:
  11. Another couple of spins of this CD -- I love this music that much. I was the kind of geeky teen that a band like Talking Heads was made for. I think they are one of the few bands for which I owned every album they made. I love the film as well. It's one of the best music movies ever made and it takes the viewer on a marvelous journey and while there is not "plot" to it, there is a definite dramatic arc to it. I remember a SNL skit around the time of this movie that had some one in a mock up of the "big suit" and singing, You may ask yourself, "Where did I buy this suit?" / And you may ask yourself, "Were there no mirrors where I bought this suit?" Now listening to some new arrivals from a big box o' goodies from Dusty Groove which arrived today!!! I got this because I am a fan of Mimi Fox's playing. It's okay. !! A very good album!
  12. Elvis Costello (aka Mr. Diana Krall) has canceled his remaining tour dates in Europe following successful cancer surgery, he announced on his website this week. https://www.yahoo.com/gma/elvis-costello-reveals-aggressive-cancer-cancels-tour-dates-150503726--abc-news-celebrities.html I'm sure some folks here are fans of his and some are not. Regardless of that, I hope we can all join together in wishing a fellow human being all the best in his battle against this disease.
  13. Earlier: This is a terrific "live" album with several toe-tapping originals by band members Rodgers Grant, Bobby Capers (and one tune by his wife, Valerie), Pat Patrick and by Mongo himself. It's odd that one of his more enduring songs, "Para Ti", was not included on the original LP and is presented on the CD as a bonus track. Currently: First listen. This CD arrived in the mail today, just one day after the 45th anniversary of its recording at the Montreux Jazz Festivall.
  14. With Sal Nistico and Sonny Fortune!! (But why is there a photo of Hoagy Carmichael playing drums on the cover?)
