  1. I enjoyed this so much yesterday that I'm listening to it again today:
  2. There's no tidy, agreed-upon divisions. By "mid- and late-period" Ellington, I'm basically referring to everything after the Blanton-Webster band. So, yes, mid-1940s onward.
  3. My recommendations: - The World of Duke Ellington by Stanley Dance - Beyond Category: The Life and Genius of Duke Ellington by John Edward Hasse - Duke: A Portrait of Duke Ellington by Derek Jewell - Duke Ellington in Person: An Intimate Memoir by Mercer Ellington I would avoid the biographies by James Lincoln Collier and Terry Teachout, who both fail to understand/recognize the brilliance and importance of mid- and late-period Ellington.
  4. Apparently, he's taking some time off from the forum. There was a whole thread about it: https://www.organissimo.org/forum/topic/92533-soulpope-mia/
  5. Now spinning: Junior Mance - Holy Mama (East Wind/Inner City, rec. 1976) with Martin Rivera and Salvatore LaRocca
  6. My "reference recording" for these works. Sublime stuff.
  7. Yep. Simion sorta "steals the show." Although Mal sounds great too, of course. NP:
  8. Next up: Buster Williams Quartet - Lost in a Memory (TCB, 1999)
