Now:
Duke Ellington - The Pianist (Fantasy, rec. 1966 and 1970)
Always delightful to hear EKE is small-group settings, so he can stretch out a bit more than usual on piano.
For sure.
Also, it's nice to be able to read the original liner notes on a Japanese LP for once -- since they're translated into English!
Next up:
Baden Powell - The Legendary MPS Albums (Most Perfect Sound Edition, rel. 2008)
Disc 2 - listening to the cuts originally released as Canto on Guitar (1971)
Now spinning on my turntable:
Baden Powell Quartet, Vol. 3 (Barclay FR, 1971)
This LP arrived in the mail yesterday, and I just gave it thorough cleaning on my record cleaning machine. The music, AQ, and record condition are all TOP-SHELF. Beautiful. And the LP only cost me $5 on eBay. Quite a score!
I think this band -- with Ernesto Ribeiro Gonçalves (b), Helio Schiavo (d), Alfredo Bessa (perc, vo) and Janine de Waleyne contributing occasional vocals -- is one of the finest supporting groups that Powell ever had.
Now officially on my "to get" radar: Volumes 1 & 2 from the same December 1970 sessions in Paris.
Just arrived, pulled from my mailbox last night:
Mal Waldron-Terumasa Hino - Reminiscent Suite (Victor JP, rec. 1972)
BBE reissue
AMAZING. Music that makes my hair stand on end.
Tremendous.
Me too.
But I was very late to the game. I'd been listening to jazz for decades time before I got 'round to Jacquet.
But better late than never, I guess.
Now listening to more Wallace Davenport:
Yup, the cover art is ugly -- but the music is terrific.
My adult son -- who is a working (visual) artist -- saw the cover earlier today. He laughed and said: "Eww. Early digital."
Next up:
Eddie Palmieri - Arete (TropiJazz, 1995)
Eddie Palmieri (p, arr), Donald Harrison (as), Brian Lynch (tr), Conrad Herwig (tb), John Benitez (b), José "Cochise" Claussell (tim), Paoli Mejias (bgo), Richie Flores (cga), Adam Cruz (d)
