  1. Elis Regina - Montreux Jazz Festival: Gravações Inéditas (WEA-Warner Arquivos, rec. 1979)
  2. One of his finest hours, for sure. But we're spoiled for choice. He made so many extraordinary albums.
  3. Yes. I decided to go with the less expensive option.
  4. Eddie Palmieri - Superimposition (Tico, 1970) and José Roberto Bertrami - Dreams Are Real (Milestone, 1986)
  5. Now spinning: Akiyoshi-Tabackin Big Band - Tanuki's Night Out (JAM, 1981) Also released as From Toshiko with Love on Baystate Japan
  6. Now: Duke Ellington - The Pianist (Fantasy, rec. 1966 and 1970) Always delightful to hear EKE is small-group settings, so he can stretch out a bit more than usual on piano. For sure. Also, it's nice to be able to read the original liner notes on a Japanese LP for once -- since they're translated into English!
  7. Next up: Baden Powell - The Legendary MPS Albums (Most Perfect Sound Edition, rel. 2008) Disc 2 - listening to the cuts originally released as Canto on Guitar (1971)
  8. Now spinning on my turntable: Baden Powell Quartet, Vol. 3 (Barclay FR, 1971) This LP arrived in the mail yesterday, and I just gave it thorough cleaning on my record cleaning machine. The music, AQ, and record condition are all TOP-SHELF. Beautiful. And the LP only cost me $5 on eBay. Quite a score! I think this band -- with Ernesto Ribeiro Gonçalves (b), Helio Schiavo (d), Alfredo Bessa (perc, vo) and Janine de Waleyne contributing occasional vocals -- is one of the finest supporting groups that Powell ever had. Now officially on my "to get" radar: Volumes 1 & 2 from the same December 1970 sessions in Paris.
  9. Just arrived, pulled from my mailbox last night: Mal Waldron-Terumasa Hino - Reminiscent Suite (Victor JP, rec. 1972) BBE reissue AMAZING. Music that makes my hair stand on end. Tremendous.
  10. Terumasa Hino Quintet - Hino at Berlin Jazz Festival '71 (Victor Japan) Yep, I've added the LP to my "to get" list!
  11. Now playing: Masahiko Satoh - Kwan Ji Zai (Denon JP, rec. 1976) Another stunning solo piano album from Masahiko Satoh. Beyond category.
  12. Now playing: Jerry Gonzalez & the Fort Apache Band - Pensativo (Milestone, 1995)
  13. Masaru Imada Trio +2 - Green Caterpillar (TBM/Craftman, rec. 1975) Keyboards – Masaru Imada Guitar – Kazumi Watanabe Electric bass – Isoo Fukui Drums – Tetsujiro Obara Congas, Percussion – Yuji Imamura
  14. Really enjoying this album lately: Masaru Imada Quartet - Now!! (Three Blind Mice/Craftman, rec. 1970) Masaru Imada (p) with Ichiro Mimori (ts,ss), Takashi Mizuhashi (b), and Masahiko Ozu (d)
  15. Wonderful, a fave of mine.
  16. Me too. But I was very late to the game. I'd been listening to jazz for decades time before I got 'round to Jacquet. But better late than never, I guess. Now listening to more Wallace Davenport:
  17. Agreed. Even more broadly: Jacquet doesn't get nearly the love/cred/ink that he should. IMO.
  18. Yup, the cover art is ugly -- but the music is terrific. My adult son -- who is a working (visual) artist -- saw the cover earlier today. He laughed and said: "Eww. Early digital."
