  1. More Dexter: Same band as Manhattan Symphonie but live instead of studio. I love how these performances are sooooooo laid back and relaxed and soulful.
  2. Now spinning: Oh yes. Nice!
  3. Enjoy!
  4. Sure thing!
  5. Now spinning: Roy Ayers Ubiquity - He's Coming (Polydor, 1972) Elemental reissue Earlier: The Betty Carter Album (Verve, originally released on Bet-Car in 1976) Such a terrific album.
  6. I was just poking around on Dusty Groove, and I see that Yamataifu, an album by Toshiyuki Miyama & His New Herd with Masahiko Sato, is going to be reissued in June. Unfortunately, it looks like it's going to be reissued on vinyl only. The music on Yamataifu is a pleasingly weird mix of new & old, avant-garde and traditional big band. I think all of the compositions and arrangements are by Sato. You can hear it on YT here. Sato made a whole series of records with Miyama's "New Herd," among them: Canto of Libra (1970), Yamataifu (1972), Straight Ahead (1974), and Nayutagenjo (1976). For my money, Nayutagenjo is the pick of the bunch, so I'm hoping it'll be reissued at some point -- but Yamataifu is very interesting too.
  7. Now this: Carol Sloane - As Time Goes By (Eastwind, rec. 1982)
  8. Wish I had a copy! For now, it's YT for me. But at least there's that. Years ago, I would've been breaking the bank -- or, more likely, not even hearing the music in the first place. Totally agree. Also, I'm starting to realize that any album featuring both Togashi & Satoh will almost certainly be extraordinary. The pairing of the two of them is bound to produce something special.
  9. with Mototeru Takagi (ts), Masahiko Satoh (p), and Yoshio Ikeda (b); recorded November 1969
  10. More Latin music: Libre - Con Salsa ... Con Ritmo, Vol. 1 (Salsoul, 1976) featuring a bevy of all-star guests -- including Ronnie Cuber, Milton Cardona, Marty Sheller, Dave Valentin, Nelson González, Ed Byrne, and Mike Lawrence With no less than FOUR trombones on hand for this session (Bryne plus Barry Rogers, Jose Rodrigues, and Papo Vázquez), Libre definitely echoes Eddie Palmieri's La Perfecta-like sound.
  11. I keep coming back to this album again & again lately: Sonora Ponceña - La Orquesta de Mi Tierra (Inca, 1978)
  12. Just finished streaming this: Very skronky at times -- but also very beautiful at times. Sometimes simultaneously.
  13. I love that stuff!
  14. This CD compiles two Kid Thomas LPs originally released on the Smoky Mary label: Living New Orleans Jazz (rec. 1973) and Kid Thomas featuring Alton Purnell (rec. 1975).
  15. If you have the IPI CD version of Dogon A.D., then you've got half of 'Coon Bid'ness: "The Hard Blues" !!! The BETTER half, at that.
  16. Two albums from the Dutch avant-jazz scene in the 1970s: Willem Breuker Kollektief - Live in Berlin (BVHaast/FMP, 1981) recorded in 1975 and Instant Composers Pool Tentet – Tetterettet (ICP, 1977) I wasn't me, Rab. I'm not familiar with that record. But I'm happy that you're enjoying it, regardless.
  17. Thanks for the feedback, amigos. My copy is due to arrive in a few days. I'll adjust my expectations accordingly and glean from it whatever I can. Yesterday, I pulled Kevin Whitehead's New Dutch Swing from my shelf and I'm re-reading bits from it.
